Hi Guys,

i have the following

I have the following: -

Emtac Bluetooth receiver

Tom Tom 2

Ipaq 5450

over the last 48hrs i have had tremendous problems with satellite fixes on my set up (green light on constantly for minutes at a time) and i wondered if anyone else had been in this position.

i wondered if it was possbile to hard reset the device in case it has got 'confused' or if there are other areas i should examine.

It's quite possible you've been receiving rebounded signals off buildings or bad signals through trees/bushes. If you've commenced driving this will also extend TTFF times.

There's no way of hard resetting the Emtac, and it really wouldn't make much difference. What you can do is download WinFast Navigator and use this as a diagnostic tool to see how many sats are in view, which sat numbers and signal strengths. It may just be a coincidence, or it maybe due to rebounded signals, or even local interference either affecting the GPS Receiver, or even interference between the receiver and the Pocket PC.

Are you aware that Bluetooth and WiFi hardware use the same frequencies spectrum ? One of the fears is that WiFi as it becomes more popular could start interfering with Bluetooth. The real fear is the opposite way round as Bluetooth has a much quicker way of spanning the spectrum and can be used as a blocking tool against WiFi networks. Probably a little too much info there

I have BT and WiFi and they all seem to work without interfering with each other. So this may be a bit of a red herring.

I often have the Emtac running (OK most of the time) in the office, which is strange as I know exavtly where that is.

It does depend on which channels the Bluetooth is scanning and locking onto. It won't necessarily wipe out a Bluetooth connection entirely but if you have devices constantly scanning the Bluetooth frequency spectrum, it is possible that it will cause interference with a WiFi setup, this is of course will only happen if youre using 802.11a/g and would only occur if the devices are a long distance apart and the Bluetooth device was in-between. I know several companies who have two buildings, one across the street from the other and they're using WiFi to connect the networks. Now if someone sat in a double decker bus with a laptop and started scanning the Bluetooth band and started performing a lot of tranfsers and receives, then it could interfere or swamp the WiFi network and cause a lot of CRC errors in transmit/receive.

Hi there,

thanks for the information, switching on and off seems to have no effect, i have re installed tonight and i will monitor to see whats happening.

i am not sure that Wifi is the problem because i have a wireless network at home (for the last 3 years) and this has only happened recently.

one thought, does anyone think that this could be due to the Iraq situation????

Nothing to do with Iraq whatsoever, there are no degredations in GPS signals (atleast not here), maybe in Iraq, but that's with SA. Your problem is probably down to localised interference or receiving signals rebounded and not direct line of sight.

I had a few month ago the same problem with my EMTAC GPS. I was able to correct the situation by connecting to the unit using Winfast navigator, and then selecting "factory reset" in the Command menu.

Guys,

an update on the situation,

i have been able to rectify the problem on my kit by doing the following: -

changing the gps type from Emtac wireless to something else (I used a SIRF connection), this 'woke up' my receiver (you may recall that i had no fix for minutes at a time) and i had a fix, however the map view did not work

i changed back to CRUX and then back to wireless GPS and the whole thing came back to life and works fine, no hang ups, no problems with the navigator screen etc

i conclude therefore that there must be some two way communication between Tom Tom and the receiver and this procedure re configured the set up!
