Of course I know that... I'm talking about the consept of CheckPOIn. _________________ Gunnar Nystul, Forum Admin, TomTom Forum Norway and Nystul Navigasjon

If MS Streets and trips has them POIs then you can export them from there and convert into TomTom POIs.
You probably need MapPoint and some programming skills, but the idea is the same.
MS Streets and Trips 2004 doesn't seem to have an Export function (MS S&T 2000 appears to be the last time), as far as I can tell. Regardless, how do I get them into TT 2004? There doesn't seem to be an Import function on it.

As I said you will need to use the Active X component (and MapPoint) for that
Custom POIs get added to TomTom by converting text files with the coordinates and descriptions to OV2 files (via MakeOV2). Have a look in this forum, there are a lot of instructions how to create and include your own POIs. This custom POI stuff is extremely popular in Europe, but just starting to catch on over here. _________________ Lutz

I am very disappointed in the new version of TomTom. In TTN3 I think the program had virtually all the features I want, very little tweaking necessary. But I would like the opportunity to upgrade the maps each year, and would of course be prepared to pay for this. But the new version is going to turn me away from TomTom.
But where to? I also have CoPilot 5, but would very much like to vary the speeds on different types of roads so that it selects the type of route I prefer. Also, CP5 misses a lot of voice instructions (even though they are on the screen if it's convenient to read them)
Mapopolis has beautiful maps, but there are so many errors in my home area that it's not a practical proposition yet (though Mapopolis say they will have some major mapping revisions available later this year)
That leaves Navigon, but I note comments from people like Lutz, whose views I respect, that it falls far short of TTN3
So where to go when TomTom introduce their downgrade for Europe and UK?

I agree with you Robin. In addition I have also tried NAVMAN SmartST V3 and this is even worse.
It would be nice if we could just upgrade the maps for TT3, without having to purchase software upgrades, or in this case downgrade. _________________ Please follow me on twitter @mdyson1968

Thanks for reminding me - I just looked up MapPoint, but it's too expensive at $300. Rather than that, I'd prefer sell TTN, save myself the effort, and get something that would have the airports. The Garmin units definitely have them, due to Garmin's aviation background.
I did find the MakeOV2, and I used it to enter a few airports. That works. I do have listings of western US airports, so this is a workable approach for this year. Next year, we will travel the East coast, for which I don't have listings now, but might be able to get.
Also, with the increasing number of people using TT Go, there might POI lists produced like in Europe. I will check the TT Go forum, and perhaps post a request there, or maybe there is a combined forum for common isuses (TT Go and TTN) like this one that I missed.
Did you try POIconverter? If you have the POI or waypoints in another format, you can convert them to ov2. I never use it as I only have tomtom. Have a good day...
Quote:
POIConverter will convert Points of Interest, routes and tracks stored in the formats shown in the first list to any of the other formats in that list. The external data entries are read into an internal data structure which is used to populate the records of the selected output format. Features new in version 3.XX are shown in bold.
I just converted a database for 5616 airports in the state to be able to have them in Tomtom.
Hope that it helps... You can download the ov2 file here:

My night is superb! You just saved me many hours and probably a bunch of dollars, too. I've Googled until I was dizzy, looking at various sites and forums, and posting in various places, but without luck.
There was a problem I should have noticed immediately when my first conversion of WA state airports yielded a "No POI" message in TT2004: the longitudes in the .asc file are positive, and need to be negative. It took me half an hour to realize this, then all was well.
A much smaller issue is the coordinates will not always be close to the actual airport entry road (they are the runway center), so TT2004 will pick a different road, but still close to the airport so it can be seen. 90% of the airports I checked went to the right road - plenty good enough. My wife says "Being wrong 10% of the time is better than being wrong 50% of the time like we are now".
I fly a sailplane and often land at airports along our route, while she brings the motorhome and trailer. She will be delighted to be guided to within sight of the airport, even at night, even when the signs are missing, and without using the garbled instructions the locals give half the time.
Did I say "thank you"?
Back to business:
1) this should be posted somewhere so others can get to the airport - where do people suggest?
2) Can you tell me how to do the conversion, so I can update the list once a year, in case you are hit by a bus or something?
3) Can Canadian airports be done (I'm getting greedy now)? I fly my glider there a couple times a year.
Maybe someone can point me at other USA lists that surely exist, such as Wal-Marts, dump stations, rest areas?
I've used aviation GPS software for several years (see http://mobile.seeyou.ws/), but TT2004 is the first car navigation system I've used, and the few days I've had it isn't enough to discover all I need to know.
