|
|
I've been thinking about buying Sat Nav for a while now. After serious concideration I have decided to go the Symbian Smartphone route so now its down to Route 66 or TomTom.
The thing is I'll be wanting to use it while I'm on foot aswell as in a car. The reviews on this site rate them both for in-car use but dont say anything about use on-foot. Has anyone any experience with using either system outside their cars?
Has anyone used both systems and can tell me which is best?
For your guide I'll be using it on a Nokia 7610 (these forums seem to suggest TomTom works on this phone despite what their website says) if that makes a difference at all!!
Thanks

Be aware that whilst street navigation products can be used successfully on foot if you're sticking to roads (some have a mode that you can tell them you're on foot, so they'll ignore restrictions like one way streets), street navigation software is useless off-road.
It would help if you said what you wanted to do with the navigation system whilst on foot.

Thank you for your reply DavidW.
I'd be using it mainly in Towns and Cities almost like an A to Z, where I have to park well away from my final destination and have to navigate myself around different locations on-foot. Do you know if the software includes things like pedestrian zones? Do either of the systems I mentioned have the 'on-foot' mode?
Another thing while I'm here, am I right in thinking that you can't add your own POIs (like this sites Speed Camera Database) on Route 66?
Thanks again

Route 66, Wayfinder offer you pedestrian mode that would be useful to you. Just make sure you change it back when your in the car as it will take you up the wrong way up 1 way roads. _________________ Regards

Because TomTom supply an MMC card for TTM, they cannot claim compatibility with the 7610... |

you can easily copy the contents of the card and place onto the smaller MMC card, i have it on my 7610 and i have found no problems. _________________ Regards

Thanks for your help folks.
Steven, - if you read this thread again - does TomTom have a walk mode on it? Have you used both systems? If so which do you prefer?

No Tom Tom does not have the pedestrian facility that is why I advised that Wayfinder does. Tom Tom is probably the easiest navigation system on all platforms to use, I have just installed Route 66 onto my phone but have not had a chance to test. Will let you know how I get on _________________ Regards

yes route66 100% works on a 7610 you`ll just need to purchase a rs mmc card as mentioned above
route66 is very good , loads of user options ,..but the BIG downside with route66 is ya can`t add the speed camera database as route66 don`t support adding ya own POI
yes route66 does support walking user options while traveling are
fastest/car
shortest/car
fastest/lorry
shortest/lorry

Thanks Steven, I'd appreaciate your views on Route66. Just to get one thing straight in my mind though, does the pedestrian facility just allow you to go down one-way streets or does it do anything else i.e. is that the only thing I'd lose by having TomTom rather than Route66?
Flasher, it says on this sites review of Route66 that it comes pre-installed on a RS MMC card - is this not the case or did you just buy the software on its own?
Thanks again everyone for all your help. I'm really gonna have to make a decision soon (before her indoors finds the money and spends it on something much less useful) - it just seems both systems have completely different advantages and disadvantages

hi maxi
yes your right i stand corrected, route66 comes on a rs mmc whereas my tomtom came on mmc .
so easy to get confused due to me owning both tomtom-mobile and route66
regarding the pedestrian route on foot , i`ve not tested it
next time i go into town i`ll find a 1 way street and put it to some tests on foot _________________ iPhone 3Gs 32GB

So you've got both then Flasher? Easy question then - which do you prefer and why?
Its starting to look like a flip of a coin!!!
Thanks

i think there both very good,
tend to use tomtom more due to being able to use the speed camera database
the BIG downfall of route66 is ya can`t use the speed camera database,
if route66 brought out an update so ya could use add on POI then i`d probably use route66 more as its got more user options
so to round it off
tomtom
ya can use speed camera database,
but traffic info ya have to pay extra to use
route66
can`t use camera database,
but traffic info is FREE

Presumably, Flasher, you couldn't use TomTom support if you needed it because you're phone (and mine) isn't on their (very restrictive) list. Is this a problem?

i`ve never needed the use of support so far,
and to be honest this forum is the first place i`d come for help as there is plenty of guru`s here that would help cure any problems.
most important thing though: which ever you choose as soon as it arrives
before ya use it make a backup of your card to your pc, that way if ya delete anything off the original then you`ll have your backup to replemish lost files _________________ iPhone 3Gs 32GB
