Hi all,
My work takes me all around the country, on road and off.
Could someone sugest which software would be useful for both purposes, or do i need different maps and switch between the two (or can they be set to change automatically).
If i do need seperate software for my offroad work, which types are suitable and where i can find them
Thanks

You really do need separate software packages. Pocket PC is likely to be the best hardware for you.
You could check out TomTom Navigator 3, Navman Start St 3, CoPilot 5 or Navigon for street navigation, and Memory Map, Anquet or Fugawi for off-road mapping. Be aware that if you go for off-road software with Ordnance Survey map data, there's limitations in how much OS mapping you can download to the Pocket PC at once.
If you check out the reviews on this site and the various forums, you should get an idea of the strengths and weaknesses of the various products.

I've personally used TomTom 3.07 for road navigation and MemoryMap for off-road and both have worked great. I find a PDA (PocketPC) with a built in GPS unit the simplest way to work as it makes moving between road and off-road very simple and quick (you literally take PDA out of car-cradle and you are off). _________________ Medion 95000 | TT3.07 | Kingston 512MB SD |

Thanks guys,
I already have an ipaq 3975. I have on order, a fortuna clip-on, and a 1gb Lexar high speed SD card.
As i work in a small area at a time (5 - 10 miles max) so loading OS maps shouldn't be a problem.
This just leaves the software.
Can i download trial versions or do i have to pay my money and take my chances? |

The three major players in OS mapping have demos that you can play around with.
Memory Map, Anquet and Fugawi.
Incidentally the only limit I have experienced with the size of an OS map area downloaded to the PPC is the memory available to store it. _________________ Ian.

Hi Ian,
So a 1gb SD card should be enough to store both street maps and OS maps.
Do i need to close the street navigation software and start the OS softeware when i leave the road or can i navigate straight to my final destination? |

More than enough.
An OS map the size of one Landranger (1:50,000) transferred to the PPC memory card takes up 17MB of memory (Anquet).
You can only have one application using the GPS at a time.
However, there is a program called GpsGate which allows you to have several applications using the GPS data at the same time.
I have used it successfully with SmartST and Travel-i for safety camera detection with both applications running together and it does work very effectively with the ability to switch between the two.
I have never tried it with SmartST and Anquet at the same time but now you have raised the question I am going to try it. _________________ Ian.
