PostPosted: Tue Aug 31, 2004 10:53 pm    Post subject: Missing Locations in TomTom Reply with quote

Hi All,

My first post.

I have just received and commissioned my system as described below. All worked fine.

I read with interest this thread and decided to check out some of the ' missing ' locations on my ' virgin ' system. I browsed to Scarborough and found it with no problem, as shown in the TomTom mail earlier in the thread.

I then browsed to Chepstow ( Monmouth ) with no problem.

Now the interesting part. If I increased the resolution on the ' Places ' slider Chepstow disappeared and Chepstow Station appeared. Returning the slider to its original position Chepstow Station disappeared but Chepstow did not reappear. An exit from TomTom and an iPAQ reset and all was well again.

I conclude from the above that the problem is in the TomTom software and possibly related to a data ( or data pointer ) corruption associated with the resolution controls.

In addition I note that ' places ' do not appear in order of size or population. When zooming in around Chepstow for example some small villages and hamlets appear before Chepstow itself !

Clearly two, probably associated, bugs.

Hope this helps. Smile

Oxford City's one-way system - around for years! - is unknown to TT3. This is very poor. I wish they's accept that the TT3 maps are just not good enough and issue a free upgrade. No-doubt we'll be expected to pay through the nose for TT4's (?) improved - but still dated - maps...

The maps in Navigator 3 are now a year out of date, and there's no way you'll get a free upgrade now. If there was a flaw serious enough to warrant a free map upgrade, it would have happened a long time ago.

multimap.com is running more up to date TeleAtlas data at what they call the 1:10000 scale in most parts of the country (though not London where they have Bartholomew's mapping). You can check - if the copyright message mentions TeleAtlas you're looking at TeleAtlas data. One way arrows appear to show on those maps. If the information is missing, report the error so that TeleAtlas have a chance of correcting it.

Unfortunately all digital maps are out of date when they're issued.

Does this mean that tt go maps are better than the navigatorones?

Is there any difference betweeen the 2 programs?

The maps in Go are newer than the maps in Navigator 3. The Go software is based around TomTom's "common platform", which appears on the Pocket PC only in the HP Navigation Pack (in Europe), and the new TomTom Navigator 2004 product for USA / Canada.

I expect the eventual replacement for TomTom Navigator 3 in Europe will also use the "common platform" software.

As the replacement maps for Europe is expected to be the "common platform" I have also read somewhere on these forums that the "common platform" does not support either CheckPoint or the excellent digitools by Niels,
If that is the case and Navigator 4 or whatever it will be called does not support these additions would it be fair to assume that the new version might have a speed camera database or full post code facility search? Or has Santa Claus been and gone this year and not bothered to give us these goodies?

As I mentioned in this post, the "common platform" version of Navigator includes a built in POI warning facility. Meanwhile, UK Postcode is not officially supported and the data is gradually going out of date.

I'm hoping that before the version of Navigator for the Pocket PC that is to supersede Navigator 3 in Europe is brought out, some of the "missing functions", such as support for the Navigator SDK, are added - but there's no promises. If TomTom release the current version of the "common platform" Navigator as the replacement for Navigator 3 in Europe, I think they'll get a lot of users defecting to other products.

Hi David

Thanks very much for confirming that. I agree, if they have not added suport and the chances are they wont a lot of users will defect to other products.

I find the map problem very frustrating. The software may be good but i expevt the same level of detail I can get on maps published on the net
(streetmaps etx)

Is there a third party compatible map provider for tt3 nav?

No - as is standard for these products, the map format is closed and proprietary.

What sort of detail are you expecting but not seeing? I fear the problem here may be unrealistic expectations, in which case changing products isn't going to help.

Just a quick note for any potential users put off by the lack of town names in the database mentioned in this thread. I bought the Pcket PC version of TT3 yesterday, it came with V3.07 which does include all those towns (well all the ones I've checked anyway)! It won't fix any mapping errors but it looks like this version does have a better town database.

Isn't there a commercial opportunity being missed here?

All TT3 owners, and I am one, who have found shortcomings in the map data would be willing to pay a reasonable amount for upgraded maps.

Either from TT or a third party if TT released the code that they use to convert the original teledata map info.

I would have thought it cold be a 'nice little earner' for TT

Peter
PS. Is right, as I thought I saw in another thread, that TT4 maps can be read by TT3, with a small 'fix'?

Certain roads in North London are mis-named in TT3 and TTGo. It looks like they have just been wrongly programmed. For example:

Fortismere Ave N10 is wrongly called Cowley Hill
neighbouring Leaside Ave is called Apple Farm Grange
neighbouring Midhurst Ave is called Latimer Street
neighbouring Fortis Green Ave is called Couper Meadows

Nearby part of North Hill is wrongly called Boswell Close
Talbot Road is called Hungerford Gardens.

All these roads were correct in TT2.

The mapping is correct, but the naming wrong. Is all this info sent on to Teleatlas, do you know? Their website doesn't seem to have a section for reporting faults.

Thanks

I travelled to Reigate (Surrey) recently and TomTom showed it as Reigate (Aberdeenshire). The routing was OK though
