Does anybody know if Mapopolis intend to have a warning for the POI. I am holding off buying Mapopolis for the C500 smartphone because I want to use the Speed camera database and be alerted of the cameras. As far as I know it does not alert you at in it's present form. |

That's right, POI alerting is not currently on the enhancement list of Mapopolis. (they first need to get their act together and stop calling POIs landmarks or maplets...) _________________ Lutz

That seems quite odd to me. It appears that besides the usual navigation capabilities of the various programs such as Co-Pilot and TomTom, people are finding the POI alert thing very useful not just for Speed cameras but other POI aswell.
I would have thought Mapopolis would have clicked onto this by now. Ah well, their loss. One less customer. |

Don't forget, Mapopolis is a US company. Speed cameras and their POIs are virtually unknown over here. The whole POI scene in the US is still in it's infant phase.
Don't discard Mapopolis so quickly, though. It still is by far the fastest and smallest program on the market. _________________ Lutz

Don't get me wrong, I have used Mapopolis with the demo maps and was really impressed. The navigation was great and re-routing any mistakes I made worked really well. It just frustrates me that from my perspective, a nice program is missing such a big feature. If it was top of their to do list maybe I'd be a bit happier. Maybe a bit more patience on my part needed. |

Hi, dectomax,
Support for proximity alert to selected POI (there you go, Lutz, I actually wrote "POI") category is on the to-do list. The programmers tell me it won't be trivial to implement, but perhaps the new Route to Nearest function in the beta (its function has changed) is pointing the way.
Our current plan is to complete language installers for Pocket PC and Smartphone, then bring Smartphone out of beta (English only), then work on VGA support , and then move on to some long-requested program enhancements. In the next few months, look for increasing automation of some of the things you now have to do manually.
It's going to be an interesting winter and spring.
If any of you are interested in trying the beta, we're tracking it here:
http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=19126
The two newest features of the beta are the above mentioned "Route to Nearest" and the simply neat key-assignable "Detour Now" which jogs the route around an obstacle like a traffic jam or accident for a user-defined distance. (Route to Nearest appears when you tap and hold an icon in Find -> All Places by Type, and it lists up to the seven nearest locations.) _________________ Mapopolis support |

Now that Safe Harbor are on the line, can I please ask a question. I tried the demo version for my home area, West Glamorgan, South Wales, UK. I loved the maps, very clear, but in my home town they were full of mapping errors - far too many to list. They included
Wildly inappropriate speeds on some sections of road (like 50mph on a narrow single lane track) which distorted the routes chosen
Traffic only allowed one way on a dual carriageway
Traffic taken wrong way down one way streets
Lutz suggested I notify you of the errors, but they were far too many to list in Swansea
I have both TomTom and CoPilot, so have the maps from the 2 main suppliers. The mistakes don't occur in either of those, so it must be something that Mapopolis has done to the data

This is not necessarily true for TomTom (uses TeleAtlas map data) but CoPilot should be comparable (uses NAVTEQ data as does Mapopolis) _________________ Lutz

Hi, Robin,
We do not have very good maps of Wales, Ireland, and to an extent, Scotland. Our next release will improve the maps somewhat, but the biggest improvement should be found at the end of 2005, when NAVTEQ will have completed their surveying. _________________ Mapopolis support |

OK, thanks for the reply, I shall look forward to that. I think your maps are the best looking of any I have seen, but in Wales there are too many errors for them to be really viable
I'll keep watching this thread!
