Hi all
I have come across this forum post purchace of my TomTom navigator 3 kit, fortunately I seem to have made the right choice (so far !!) touch wood. Installation went fairly smoothly and within minuites of completion the kit was in my van and picking up sats literally within seconds, very impressive. Although I have only been testing for one day it has worked flawlessly or should I say as expected cos nothing in this world is perfect. I have been stunned by the speed everything happens especially the recalculation of a route when a wrong turn is taken. I have a couple of beginner questions:-
1. If I plan a route, follow it and get to my destination then from that destination I know the way to my next destination so I do not input the next stop, how do I stop the young lady telling me to do U turns ect. To get back to where I have just been ????. Can the route I have just taken be deleted ???.
2. What are the minimum number of sats TomTom will work on ?
3. I would find location by postcode invaluable and am considering installing Checkpoint PPC 2002 as this seems to be just what I need. However I have reservations, as I have a good and working setup would I be best to leave well alone and not risk upsetting the already installed and working software ? Would this software work with my set up ?
Sorry If I have bored you all to death with ‘Old Hat’
Thanks
Leo

1. In Navigator view, go through the menu pages and tap Turn Guidance off. By default, that is on the 3rd menu page
2. Usually 4 sats are needed to get a fix, but when you are driving, it will sti;ll show your position pretty accurately if the number drops to 3
3. I thought you said a couple of questions If you want full UK postcodes, download the free ukpostcode program from www.digitools.co.uk
Checkpoint doesn't itself have postcode support, but provides the hooks which enable the digitools software to interface seamlessly with TomTom. You can get Checkpoint from the Downloads section of this reflector

Thanks Robin
Ask a Yorkshireman how much it will cost and he'll probably say "a couple of quid" then ask you for a fiver
I meant to put the digitools postcode software in my original post but got dyslexia of the finger ends !!
Cheers

I find Turn Guidance Off so useful that I have it on a hardware button (which will toggle guidance on and off). It's useful, for example, when pulling into a motorway service area.
3 satellites is the minimum for any guidance and if you've got decent reception of 3 usable satellites you will get a position lock. 4 or more is recommended, though.

Attaching a program to a hardware button is done in Start Menu, Settings, Personal tab, Buttons.
Reassigning the hardware buttons in TomTom Navigator is done in File -> Properties, Advanced tab within TomTom Navigator.

Thanks David
Yep I understand but when I try to attach the postcode programme file to the hardware button it is not in the dropdown list and there seems to be no way of browsing to the exe file to select it.
The same applies in the TomTom software, it would appear easy to assign TomTom functions to hardware buttons but not to execute the postcode programme from within TomTom via a hardware button.
Just as a footnote I have installed the postcode software precisely as per instructions and it runs perfect from file explorer and does exactly what it says on the tin. I get the feeling I am missing something very basic here.

Hi again David
Iv'e sussed it, it all depends on there being a shortcut available. Without that shortcut nothing appears in the drop down menus. Everything is working luverly now
Many thanks for your help.

Might be worth looking at the Itinerary feature in TT3 if you are following a series of drop-off points. |
