DC Power on TTG

Purchase a car lighter socket extension lead like the one linked below:
and a spst Illuminated switch.
and one meter cable flat red/black twin flex speaker type wire.

cut off the lighter plug from the extension lead leaving the socket and flex and ground the black wire prefrebly somewhere out of the way under the centre console or under the glove box somewhere like that or near to your existing lighter socket so as you can connect to its ground wire..fit the switch where ever you want it connect and run the red/black twin flex cable from the switch to the location of the lighter socket extension lead wherever you have located it.connect a ground to the negative terminal on the switch if you want it to light up when its powered on..connect/solder the black wire of the twin flex from the switch to a positive feed maybe your original lighter socket positive feed and connect /solder the red wire of the twin flex from the switch to the red on the socket extension lead.Best to check that you have the polarity correct and connections correct by metering the socket if all is ok then Plug in your TomTom Go plug into the lighter socket that you have now installed and after you start your engine you can hit the switch and power it on..not forgetting to switch it off when you turn the engine off.

As I think trailing leads look awful in any car, I did not really want to use the cigar lighters on my Esprit. I have wired this unit in my glovebox so I can use the TTG’s own power adaptor. This unit alone is a SUPERB Mod as it means Phone/PDA chargers etc can be kept out of the way for just £1.50 a small price for de-cluttering your car, and more practical if your lighter socket are in the doors, as are mine!

I also did a TTG review for the lotus guys (plugging PGPS of course!),

Maplin sell those female sockets as well - code FE42V. I've got one wired in behind my dashboard (to my carphone wiring loom).

Your review, by the way, is visible without registering.

I have done a few of these and always managed to hide the lighter socket adaptor and all wiring either inside/under the centre console or under the glove box so nothing is viewable some cars have blank switches so not a problem to fit a switch into one of them as a new blank is only pennies..others where this is not possible I have used VHB tape to stick a switch in an easily accessable place where again the wire can be hidden..it just gives you the option of not having to plug the TomTom Go power lead in all the time risking a spike when you start the vehicle and to switch on only when you need to recharge the unit rather than have it on charge all the time cycling the battery does help its life span..
