I am looking for a suitable GPS setup for pedestrian use, mainly in towns. (I have a builtin one in my car.) I have a Tungsten T3 and it would be good to use that, say, with a bluetooth GPS receiver. My main question is practical, not technical: If you are 'out and around', where do you put the GPS receiver? Will it work in a pocket? I can't quite see holding the T3 in one hand and the receiver in the other. If not, how else do you set things up?
(I will mention that I did have a Magellan addin for a Visor which worked and was a one-handed setup. However it was rather slow to acquire satellites and of course had to use the Visor's built in RAM, which made juggling map files quite a challenge.) |

Hi
I've got a Fortuna Clip-On which comes with a neck strap. The GPS receiver is lightweight (110g approx.) and unobtrusive (i.e. you won't look a nob wearing it).
Wear it around your neck and you won't have a problem with the signal. THe Fortuna in XT mode is also highly sensitive. Works in my shirt pocket no trouble but XT mode can occasionally be a little inaccurate for walking.
That leaves you free to hold the IPAQ. No trouble.
Hope that helps. |

Alternatively you could get a PDA with a built in GPS like the Mitac Mio 168... _________________ Medion 95000 | TT3.07 | Kingston 512MB SD |

Some receivers come with a belt bag - perfectly enough when walking. Shirt pockets are generally fine, too (but they may look geeky when they blink away blue/green) _________________ Lutz

I successfully use the Mitac Mio 168 for both in-car use and walking around town.
In addition to CoPilot live for driving, I have the MemoryMap London A-Z and also OS maps loaded on my 1Gb SD card for walking around. I just hold the Mitac in one hand (it's no bigger than the average mobile phone so doesn't look too conspicuous), and there are no wires or any other encumbrances.
I've not tested battery life by taking it on a long walk, but you should get about 3 hrs or so - more if you only switch it on now and again to re-check your position. _________________ Nokia E65 & TT Nav6 |

I have used my IPaq 4150 with Tom Tom Bluetooth for Geocaching and it works OK with the receiver in my pocket. |
