Hi everyone.

Am new to Sat nav (& hand helds) so please bear with me just in case I ask some dumb questions.

I have a Compaq 3760 and am looking to turn it into a portable (but primarily car based) sat nav system. What is the best way to go about this? Should I buy a "jacket based" unit (as I understand it that's about the only option I have), if it is the only option, what manufacturers system should I buy? I've had a look around & it looks to me that the best opition is probably the Copmaq/Ipaq INS V2 system or possibly the Navman 3450. Am I correct in my analysis or is there a better choice for much the same money?

Last question (for the moment at least) - I have my doubts about the sound levels from the voice instruction side of things (directions telling me when to turn right/left or whatever) will I be able to hear the instructions or do I need to buy some clever contraption to overcome this problem & if I do what piece of equipment should I buy?

In anticipation of your comments - Thanks for you help.

You should go for a jacket, but only for CF storage. As a receiver I recommend you go for a serial version.
Don't forget the mount - best would be an active mount which could also power the GPS receiver.

If you want portability as well as car-based, I'd say a jacket is the only way to go, unless your 3760 also has an SD slot.

3100, 3600 and 3700 series are too old to have a built in SD slot. The first iPAQs with an SD slot were the 3800 series, which have a very slow (1 bit only) non-SDIO slot.

From the 3900 series onwards, all iPAQs have a full featured SD slot, and I think all have SDIO Now! SDIO drivers. The 3900 series need upgrading from the original ROMs (1.00 for the 395x, 2.00 for the 397x) for SDIO support.
