Hi,
How do I find out whats on my memory card? I've downloaded maps onto the card via Hotsync but can't seem to view the files, I can see that from the calculations that I've transferred them. I also can't open the map files due to them not being on any list! For the record, I have a 256Mb Toshiba SD card.
Would any other SatNav software work with my Tungsten E? My brother has TomTom with a HP Palm and it seems so easy to use.....
Is it also normal for hotsync to take an absolute age to transfer files?
If I sound confused, its because the wretched package is doing my head in!!

the files will take ages unless you use a card reader. thats just how it is.
the card reader would also allow you to view the files on the card. otherwise you need a program for your palm. try filez
as far as i know you will be lucky to find any other sat nav to work with the palm unless it is a T3. i have a T2 and in the same boat.
make sure the program is installed then install the maps to the sd card. when you start the program it will ask where the location is. chose the sd card and your maps should appear. |

Thanks for your reply.....
I purchased a card reader as suggested and it has simplified matters no end. However, I'm being ultra thick, I simply cannot seem to load any maps via the programme. I can see the maps are on the card but the programme simply doesn't see them. I'm wondering if I've downloaded them incorrectly. Its really doing my head in bigtime!
I also can't seem to work out why one has to crop sections of the map to download.
My method/attempt.......
1. I load Mapsonic and Tungsten software on PC.
2. I then load Mapsonic on to Palm.
3. I then launch Mapsonic on PC and crop map accordingly and export to SD card.
4. I then put SD card in Palm and lauch Mapsonic.
5. No maps to be seen so I then HotSync and relaunch Mapsonic and still no joy
6. Afterall that, I then go on a wander through the Palm/SD card and PC not really knowing what I'm doing and occasionally browsing through the very tiny instruction manual.
Can anyone pleeeeeeeeeeeze in basic language list what I need to do

Update.....
I've discovered my Toshiba SD card is possibly no good! I can see the card and load maps on the card via a card reader but when I attempt to use the card in my Tungsten it can't see it.
Any ideas somebody? How do I test it?

It's unusual for Toshiba SD cards to be bad; they're normally one of the more reliable brands, but there's always exceptions.
Unfortunately I have no experience whatsoever on Palms, but if there's no outstanding ROM or similar upgrades for your device, the only thing I can suggest is trying to format the card in another device, such as a PC with a card reader. If it still doesn't work, you've probably no option but to return the card as incompatible with your Palm.

One other thought.
When you cut a map and then choose to save or export it a dialogue box appers asking for a location. At this point there is a drop down menu where you can change the format. Make sure you are choosing the correct format for the card and not the format for the Palm internal memory. _________________ Everywhere and nowhere

Many thanks for all your help, but still no success!
This is a complete update of activities.....
1. I've saved (in the correct format) the maps to the SD Card and although the Palm will recognise the card it still won't see any saved maps.
2. I've done numerous 're-sets' on the Palm.
3. I've tried various ways of saving....to the SD card directly and also to the PC desktop then using my card reader I do a drag and drop.
4. And lastly, I've tried a 'Kingston' SD Card which I know works and still the Palm won't see the maps! Which now makes me think something is up with the Palm itself.
As for returning the SD card, is that really an option? I can't find anywhere in the manual that states I should use a particular card. That said, which card(s) do you suggest I purchase? I'm only a novice so all your help will be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance....

Can you see the files in a palm file browser but not in Mapsonic or neither? _________________ Everywhere and nowhere

I guess you are ejecting the card from Windows correctly using the system tray icon before physically removing it.
Can you see the files via the card reader after it is removed then re-inserted on the PC? _________________ Everywhere and nowhere

The maps on the SD card have to be in a directory named mapsonic_maps in the root of the card
You should use MapStore to create maps for PC, then copy these files (with .fdp extension) into the mapsonic_maps directory on the SD card
insert SD card into palm, run mapsonic and select file->open then select CARD (not MEMORY) from the top dropdown, and you will see the list of maps in the SD card. |
