|
|
I have loaded Tomtom maps onto a new SD card “Integral 256mb 66X high speed” to provide memory for PIOs. Having done this start-up of Tomtom is very slow and input of letters or numbers to search for a city or address is ever so slow. Replacing the Intergral SD card for the pre-loaded Tomtom card everything is back to normal speed.
I would be obliged if anyone can tell me what the problem is. |

If that Integral card is one with a letter followed by eleven numbers on the back of the card in portrait format (contacts at the top), and no other markings, it seems that they're all flawed.
I just rejected a 1GB Integral "High Speed" SD card with that type of markings. I could get the card to shut down in normal use either in my PC's card reader or my iPAQ. I found TomTom Navigator 3 crashed randomly.
The only other mention of a card with that type of markings in the forums (128MB, branded Ridata) was from someone who found it unusable.

You could try changing the FAT and cluster size on the SD to the one TomTom uses on their SD's, using something free like storagetools. I asked them this recently and they said they recommend FAT32 with 2K clusters. I tried it and it works a lot better in the address look up than what was on my card as standard (FAT 16 cluster 512 bytes) |

Just to clarify, I was using FAT32 2KByte clusters with a Backup FAT when I condemned the Integral "High Speed" 1GB card I had.
I'd love to know what the markings on jspss's card are, as that's the most reliable way to identify different types of card.

Unless it's changed, StorageTools is not free - though it has a free trial period.
It's still available to buy at the author's web site, as well as via Handango.
These days, I tend to use Anton Tomov's Pocket Mechanic - I find it has a more comprehensive set of features for the price.

Since I have a new SD card I am facing issues with Tom Tom 3 (MDAII, BT GPS). The device randomly locks up, especially after doing something else while TomTom is running (ie. browsing he internet fro traffic jams or ending a phone call.
I allready have a (japanese) Kingston 256MB card wich still works fine, although I do get the lockups at higherspeed due to the data troughput demand of TomTom, but only when I enable POI's
Last week I tried a (chinese) Sandisk 512MB which had a horrible performance (not benchmarked). I brought it back and bought an Extrememory 1GB card instead. Behaviour is better, but still lockups as described.
I did benchmarks on the kingston & Extrememory:
Kingston
read 0.87 MB/s, 5.9x
write 0.01 MB/s, 0.1x
Extrememory 1GB
read 0.81 MB/s, 5.5x
write 0.10 MB/s, 0.7x
Both card are formatted FAT16/512.
Since I saw benchmarks on xda-developers.com that are worse than mine while the user claims he has no issues with TomTom AND is using POI's I am now thinking my MDAII SD slot is faulty.
Any comment on what I should do??? _________________ eDsuB

Sorry thats what I meant
I only used it the once after downloading it, so the trial period never ran out, other than changing the fat, I had no other use for it. |

Mine has made in Japan, D000 BK4AE009632 stamped on the back, its badged up as a 256mb Simpletech Pro X high speed, sold by Clove.co.uk. Got no utilities to benchmark it, but Tomtom street search does run better with the card as FAT32, than FAT16, and the map scrolls better too. |

Wilko's codes signify a Panasonic made card. Panasonic made SD cards are known for being robust.
eDsuB - please post any codes or markings found on the back of that troublesome SD card. I can then compare them to those posted by others who are having card problems to see whether the card might be the problem.

The codes on the back of the Extrememory 1Gb card are:
EM203424
SD1GBM04S0449
MADE IN TAIWAN
As the text is hard to read, the 0's could also be O's!
All text is in this order, horizontally centred on the lower back-side of the card (portrait)
Bought the card last week for just 79 euro.
I would like to know very uch what to to. I might have the opportunity to bring it back tomorrow. _________________ eDsuB

I haven't tried that type of card myself, but there's reports of someone else having trouble with one in this thread.

mmm I should have found that thread myself
Anyway, thanks for the info. I will return it tomorrow.
What would a good card be?
I had similar issues with a China made Sandisk 512MB that I returned earlier. _________________ eDsuB

If you can avoid Sandisk, cards with that style of marking, and the cards that have just a letter followed by eleven numbers on the back (which, in my experience are broken), hopefully you'll be OK!
