Hi
New to this and would like some help. I am after getting myself a set up and don't want to apend too much money. Which phone is better the Nokia 6600 or the Orange SPV-E200. I can get the Orange cheaper but whats it like.
Is Tom Tom the best Mobile software?
Can I use any Bluetooth Gps then get the software seperate or do I need to go for the Box package that Tom Tom produces?
Thanks if anyone can help. |

They may look alike but under the hood there is a huge difference between the Nokia and the SPV
The Nokia runs on Symbian (platform 60) , and the SPV runs on Windows Mobile.. This has a big influence on the number of available navigation programs...
TomTom is good, but I would not call it the best mobile software. CoPilot is very nice on the SmartPhone, and then you have a host of other programs to choose from, like Destinator, Mapopolis, Route 66, etc etc. Compare this with the one or two programs available for the Symbian platform...
Technically you can use any BT receiver that supports pairing (a security requirement for Smartphones, not necessary for PocketPCs). But you may come cheaper with the bundle. (And here cheaper really means cheaper - also in the quality of the receiver) _________________ Lutz

Hey,
The TomTom software is only written to use TomTom's own GPS receiver, this is their way of having some kind of security code.
I am using the Nokia 6600 and both TomTom & Route66 work excellent on it, you just need to have a bigger memory card to fit them all on.
In my eyes TomTom is better than Route66 and has a bonus in that you can add your own POI files, namely the speed camera files.
You cannot buy TomTom on it's own without the GPS unit, but I have seen prices on Ebay for the whole package for about £150 gbp's + Worth looking into if your after one.

Nothing a little tinkering with the BlueTooth Pairing process can't fix. I am running it with non-TomTom receivers without problem. _________________ Lutz

Hey,
I've read about a trick like that, sometimes it works other times it doesn't.
I found a list of supposedly working GPS units, but don't quote me on it:
SysOnChip Serial GPS
SysOnChip GPS
CF Plus StreetNav iGPS
Scania Falcom A3D
Rikaline GPS-6010
PRETEC CompactGPS-LP
PRETEC CompactGPS
Pocket Track
Pocket CoPilot
GPS Jacket
Pharos iGPS-180
NAVMAN GPS100
NAVMAN GPS3000
NAVMAN GPS1000
Holux GM-270 CF
Holux GM-210
Holux GM-200
Haicom GPS
GNS gpsCard CF II
Garmin GPSIII
Garmin GPS12
Garmin Etrex
Emtac Wireless GPS
Emtac GPSJAQ
Emtac CRUX GPS
Destinator GPS
DeLORME TripMate
Ambicom GPS-CF
TomTom GPS (iPAQ Sleeve)
TomTom Navigator GPS
Simulator SysOnChip GPS port
CF_CARD GENERIC EMTAC GPSJAQ CFGPS
Rikaline 6030
Might be a good idea for people to post what units they are using other than the TomTom one.

I tested with
CoPilot BT GPS
DeLorme Blue Logger
It explicitly will NOT work with the Deluo Blackbox, because that one does not support pairing.
Your list looks odd. I thought only BT receivers would work with the smartphones? _________________ Lutz

That list looks like the list of settings in TomTom GPS on the Pocket PC - which is not that relevant to the SmartPhone product.

No. Right now it has to be a Series 60 phone. A 9500 for example would not run it (i think) _________________ Lutz

If it must be a Symbian phone then only the first three will work. the others are Windows Mobile Phones _________________ Lutz

Hi
Thanks to everyone who has been helping me. In the end I went for a SPV200 which I bought on ebay for £75 and a GLOBALSAT BT-318 Bluetooth GPS Receiver off Ebay with a free external antenna and a incar power lead for £99. I just hope they work okay. Now trying to source Tomtom if anyone knows where you can buy the software alone please let me know.
Thanks again

Hi,
I hope people don't mind me tagging onto this thread, I didn't want to start a new one when I have some "newbie" questions as well!
I've ordered my TTM which I'm going to use on a C500, I just wanted to know what the order is to get it working. Do I copy the information from the MMC card onto the MiniSD card plug it into the phone and then download the traffic patch from TomTom or do I do it in another order??
Thanks in advance!! |
