Ipaq 5550 running TTN3, typed in postcode (ukpostcode) and navigator screen just hung for 5 mins. Tried soft reset and now have dark blue screen!! How do I proceed? Thanks in advance.

Remove all accessories - memory cards, expansion packs etc. Soft reset again. If you're still stuck at a blue screen, I'm afraid you have no option other than a hard reset.

I believe the iPAQ h5550 hard resets the same way as most other modern iPAQs. Remove all accessories and external power. Press and hold the calendar and iTask buttons with one hand, then poke the reset button with your stylus using your other hand. Hold until the screen fades. Let go of all the buttons, wait five seconds, then poke the reset button again to wake the machine up.

The machine will return reset back to factory fresh condition, though the iPAQ File Store is not erased.

I throughly recommend Sprite Backup - the iPAQ Backup in your ROM is an earlier version of Sprite Backup. It's saved me a few times from an enforced hard reset. I choose to run nightly scheduled backups to my SD card, telling Sprite Backup to keep the previous two files (so that if a backup goes wrong, I should still have one good backup file on my memory card).

For further protection, I synchronise my backup files to my PC using MightySync - which is only really feasible over Wi-Fi.

For even more protection, those files then go into my backup system, which backs up the PC nightly to a 160GB hard disk dedicated as scratch space, then the backup software duplicates the disk backup to DDS-4 tape!

Unfortunately, if you have no recent backup, a hard reset is rather a painful experience. Crying or Very sad On the other hand, it can be an excuse to apply any outstanding ROM upgrades (not sure if there are any for the 5550), and set everything up from scratch again - which can finish up with a cleaner machine. Much of your software will already be in ActiveSync's Add/Remove Programs waiting to be reinstalled, which is a further time saving.

I keep all my product codes, registration keys and the like in an Excel file - it makes keeping track of my software a lot easier.

Thanks David W, hard reset did the trick. Luckily I have Sprite backup and although I have never used it before it seems to have got me going again.
Ipaq always seems to hang if TTN3 is already running and then select ukpostcode and type in a code- navigate to without 1st shutting TTN3 down, is this common?

I haven't seen the same behaviour. If you haven't already done so, I suggest you try the latest version of Navigator - assuming Navigator 3, you can get version 3.07 from the downloads area of support.tomtom.com.

I'm glad to hear that Sprite Backup got you back in operation - though I feel embarrassed for missing out one thing. Sometimes, on those iPAQs with removeable batteries, removing the battery, waiting ten seconds and putting it back again can recover from a situation where you can't soft reset without needing a hard reset. I forgot that the 5550 has a removable battery.

Hello David

Thanks for the battery info.

I have just downloaded the 3.03 upgrade and installed it, however when I start tomtom navigator I get an error message no maps found please install and activate original tomtom nav map first? I have checked the storage card and the maps are still there, how do I reactivate them.

Also once I have succesfully upgraded can I then move on to 3.07?

Thanks again David your advice is much appreciated.

You can load 3.07 straight onto TT3.01, you do not have to load 3.03 1st.

Bhau,

Open Sprite and wait for it to finish scanning your file system. <options>, <Backup Options>, <Options> button, tick in "Max number of backup files....." then enter 2 (I have 3) OK, OK etc.....

Hope this helps,

Steve.
