Hello all,
Just bought a Medion PPC with all the GPS stuff it comes with from ALDI, as, it seems, so have many others!
I have a couple of questions though. I know the PPC can take either MMC or SD memory cards, but what's the difference? Is one type faster, cheaper or more power hungry than the other type? Are they always interchangable in all devices, or is that a feature of the device itself (e.g. I have a digital camera which uses SD cards - there's no mention of MMC. But would it work with an MMC card? I guess the simple answer to that is to try it!)
On another subject, the suction cap on the screen mount just won't stick to my windscreen for more than 30seconds. Is there a vent mounted version that would fit?
Thank in advance. |

Glad you brought up the question about MMC or SD cards, I too would like to know which is the best, as the pricing is very similar.
But in your case if you have a digital camera that uses SD cards, you should buy SD cards for the medion so that you can swap and change cards.
Suprised about the suction mount, admitidely I was sceptical about the one I got, as I thought it would fall down and kill my unit, but no, it sticks like glue!
I simply take it out the Glove Compartment, place it against the windescreen firmly, making sure its celan, and then pull the lever, and it dosen't budge. |

SD cards are a development of MMC cards. They are faster (but this may not be noticed in a PDA) and also incorporates a mechanical write protection switch. Also they are thicker so you can generally use a MMC card in a SD card slot but not the reverse. I do not know about the power consumption. As they are the newer technology personally I would go for SD unless you have a particular requirement for MMC. More info here:

The second article appears to have been written some time ago as SD are now usually cheaper size for size than MMC.
Regarding the mount, I use a Brodit proclip and the holder taken of the sucker mount (screwed to the proclip) as I found my sucker mount started to fall off after several months use despite regular cleaning of the sucker and windscreen glass, plus of course the sucker mount vibrates anyway. |

I don't agree with the conclusion in the Gizmobytes article - I'd buy SD because of the speed.
SD cards can be significantly faster than MMC - which matters for many GPS applications. TomTom Navigator, in particular, works memory cards particularly hard. Pricing tends to be very similar now - so unless you've got another device you want to share the card with that only supports MMC, I'd go for SD rather than MMC.
David
Edit: mistake corrected in the last line.

As for the suction cap on the cradle, i too had the same problem with it falling off when I first fixed it....try moving it up the windscreen a little, the lower part of the windscreen has a slight curve in it and so stops complete contact...I moved mine up a bit and it stuck like glue!!!!!! hope it works for you too :-) |
