Hmmm, have just bought TomTom Navigator 3 software only CD. Unfortunately there is no 'palm' directory so it looks like this loophole has been closed by TomTom.
Lucky I have some mates with Pocket PCs so I may be able to flog it to them.
Just to warn others who might be about to make the same mistake...

When I used the installer it detected I had Hotsync installed and offered to install for Palm. Have you tried it? _________________ Everywhere and nowhere

Yes, it just said there are no Pocket PC devices installed on this computer and the installation stopped. I can't find any palm files on the cd whatsoever. |

Bummer!
Maybe you could "swap" with an owner who has an older version, hopefully the code you have will work. _________________ Everywhere and nowhere

Response from TomTom:
The earlier CD ROMs had the installer for both Pocket PC and Palm. If you have one of those disks and HotSync installed on your PC you will be able to install the Palm version of the software.
More recent CD ROMs only have the version for the Pocket PC. This is because we have the products TomTom Navigator for Palm and TomTom Navigator Bluetooth for Palm. This software will only work with our GPS receivers. Hense, the reason why we do not sell a "software only" version of the Navigator with the Palm.
So, why have people had no problems getting TomTom to work with other receivers when the Palm software WAS distributed on the Navigator cd? And why do TomTom reply with such blatant bs? |

Why is TomTom's reply Bs?
They correctly state that the PalmOS installer was on early CD releases but is no longer as they now only sell TomTom Navigator for PalmOS as a bundled solution with a cabled or BT GPS.
The softeare that was on the original CDs and the curent TT for Palm is the same software, it's just a marketing decision of TT not to offer the Palm version as a standalone software package. _________________ Darren Griffin |

It's this part of tomtom's reply that has been proved to be erroneous:
"This software will only work with our GPS receivers. "
Many people have it working on 3rd party GPS hardware. I have the software on a Sony CLie TH55.
If tomtom have made a marketing decision not to unbundle, fine. It's annoying though that they should pretend that their decision is for technical reasons. _________________ Everywhere and nowhere

Ah yes, I hadn't spotted that, you are quite correct of course
TomTom have followed this route with TT Mobile too and it is not one that I would wish to encourage. It is easy to see the reasoning, if your target market is new GPS consumers then it is much easier for everyone if you sell a bundle with a tested GPS receiver, it makes support far simpler and removes any issues of comptability.
BUT even given the above I see no reason why they cannot sell software only packages for the many of us who already own GPS receivers, after all NMEA is supposedly a standard protocol. New users buy the bundle, advanced or other users buy the software only.
TomTom will simply encourage piracy amongst the userbase of they follow this course, TT Mobile is already suffering and many potentially honest purchasers who already own a GPS receiver will turn to 'copies' as they cannot legitimately purchase it any other way than with a bundled GPS. Worse still, TT Mobile will ONLY work with the TT BT GPS although any TT BT GPS will do. _________________ Darren Griffin |
