Holux just released their new Bluetooth GPS Receiver. Based upon the technology built into the GR-230 that we already reviewed, Holux have re-engineered this and brought out what appears to be a slightly larger version of the GR-230 called the GR-231.

The full review is available here.

If this is basically a GR-230 in a different box and different firmware, can I upgrade my GR-230 to be X-Trac enabled?

It's a different model, with internal differences. You won't be able to upgrade a GR-230 as it doesn't support user upgradable firmware.

The GR-231 is still using the SiRFIIe/LP chipset but it does without WAAS and has XT2.0.2 loaded to the chip

Great review.

When is the GR-231 going to be available?

Hi,

It appears that the GR231 will be available from holux.co.uk in the next couple of weeks.

Price £119.99 (incl VAT).

Cheers,
Gary

Will the 231 be as good when walking as the Fortuna Clip-On in XT mode?

If you're using the Fortuna in XTrac mode and it's XT1 then it will be better.

Has it got a non-slip base for use on the dashboard....

Is it an improvement on the technology used in the navman 4400 (which I currently use)...

Regarding the base being non-slip. I'm back home and can now verify this with the GR-231 in my hands. The base is plastic but there are two rubber feet on the base that stop it from sliding around the dashboard. They are small but I have never had the GR-231 slide across my dash.

Anyone know what the battery life's like, and is the battery a standard mobile phone model?

The dashboard I have is fairly rubbery in a pimple style design so it does grip most things quite happily. There are only two rubber feet on the base and not three or four, but I still don't think this will be a problem on most dashboards. Even if you drive a Citreon C5 (I apologise now if anyone does drive a C5!).

I haven't produced any exhaustive tests, but have been getting at least 7 hours use out of them, Holux suggest 9 hours. I have usually gone to recharge the battery before the 9 hour stage because I tend to hate losing a battery, but I will do some battery tests.
