I think I'm coming to the end of the road with my beloved 2720s. My favourite unit, whilst still functional, has now started showing a date in February 2005. Everything else still works, but of course daylight saving time is all messed up, as are the data from saved tracks. This has happened to two other units, and is to the best of my knowledge unfixable (I've explored this previously). I'm left with one fully functioning unit.
My question is, which Garmin unit would be a suitable successor? I want to retain as much functionality as possible, e.g. configurable tabs, ability to upload points with POI Loader, ability to hardwire to vehicle, ability to upload OSM maps. Doesn't have to be a new unit - something older but tried and trusted will do. I don't want a dumbed down one, nor do I want an all-singing, all-dancing one with features I simply don't need.
Don't know if you've already resolved this but....
I had a 2610 which was fantastic. Unfortunately the map format was no longer supported and I now have a Drivesmart 50.
It's OK but the biggest issue is that the routing can be, to put it bluntly, stupid. As an example, recently I was coming along the M1 in the roadworks around Sheffield with the 50mph limit..
The sat nav directed me down a slip road, straight round the island and up the slip road back onto the M1.
It routinely directs off the "main road" down little country lanes/single track roads to "cut off a corner"
I've contacted Garmin HO with no resolution and on here similarly without any real answer.
Sorry if that's not a positive answer but I hope it's helpful.
I came to the conclusion that all navigation systems now used the posted speed limit to calculate the route. So it 'sees' a single track lane as being the same as a major road, as they are both NSL zones.
I went down the Magic Earth route on my phone and use truck routing. It also allows you to use the PGPSW database with your own POIs.
The other alternative is Co Pilot on mobiles, but they have just had a major rewrite of their software, and it has not gone well. I use the camper van version of that.
