On the A361 from Barnstaple to South Moulton there is a stretch of 6 average speed cameras

The poles each hold 2 cameras, one facing in each direction, so the average speed limit applies in both directions

However the speed limit changes midway from National Speed Limit (60 or 50 depending on vehicle) to 40 and then back

Cam 1
NSL
Cam 2
NSL
Cam 3
40
Cam 4
40
Cam 5
NSL
Cam 6

This was the eastbound layout, the westbound set would be reversed.

Do the first and last cameras (1 & 6) have to be entered twice once as a start and then as an end depending on direction of travel?

Do cameras 3 and 4 have to be entered as end of NSL then again as start of 40mph, (vice versa for camera 5) or do I just enter the whole section as variable?. Can a specs be marked as reversible so it applies in both directions?

How do you wish this to be entered?

Regards
Rick

Wait for MaFt, but, this scenario seems to be increasing

Regardless of speed limit changes 'they' know how it should take between cameras

If possible, as I did on the M4 during the roadworks, try to submit the cameras and the change of limit locations. The cameras can be submitted on the map but you will need another post with change locations

Reversible are OK if the limit is the same in both directions which in these situations often isn't

If you can submit as the speed for the upcoming stretch and add a note to the submission stating something like "end of 40, start of NSL" etc.

So on your example for eastbound:

Cam 1E - Speed 60 - 'Start of NSL' (specs status: START)
NSL
Cam 2E - Speed 60 - 'Mid NSL' (specs status: MIDDLE)
NSL
Cam 3E - Speed 40 - 'End NSL, Start 40' (specs status: MIDDLE)
40
Cam 4E - Speed 40 - 'Mid 40' (specs status: MIDDLE)
40
Cam 5E - Speed 60 - 'End 40, Start NSL (specs status: MIDDLE)
NSL
Cam 6E - Speed 60 - 'End NSL' (specs status: END)

Don't submit as reversible as the comments will cause confusion!
converted to westbound:

Cam 1W (6E) - Speed 60 - 'Start of NSL' (specs status: START)
NSL
Cam 2W (5E) - Speed 40 - 'End NSL, Start 40 (specs status: MIDDLE)
40
Cam 3W (4E) - Speed 40 - 'Mid 40' (specs status: MIDDLE)
40
Cam 4W (3E) - Speed 60 - 'End 40, Start NSL' (specs status: MIDDLE)
NSL
Cam 5W (2E) - Speed 60 - 'Mid NSL' (specs status: MIDDLE)
NSL
Cam 6W (1E) - Speed 60 - 'End of NSL' (specs status: END)

Note: the above assumes that the cameras are located at the point where the speed limit changes...

Depending on the layout itself it might be that there are obvious end points where the speed isn't monitored. On a recent one there was a short 30 stretch with a couple of roundabouts and the positions of the cameras implies this part wasn't covered (hard to get over 30 average with 2 roundabouts etc and they won't spend money unless they can get it back Laughing Out Loud).

If you put the camera locations then I can work through on StreetView to try work out the areas being covered.

Sorry MaFt

I had submitted them before I saw your post.

It is even more complicated because I have just reviewed my dashcam footage for the complete stretch and (as you predicted) the changes in speed limits are not at the camera locations but midway between.

I submitted each camera pole twice, one for each direction with a start and end for both directions

6 poles = 12 submissions

The normal speed limit for the complete stretch is NSL but there are roadworks midway which causes the 40mph. As the roadworks should only be temporary that is why I submitted all as one speed.

All the submission emails have an ID of #0 so I can't identify them that way for you but I have attached the dashcam grabs of the locations and if you check the filename of the attached photos then the speed limit at each point is

photo 1 = NSL
photo 2 = NSL
photo 3 = NSL
photo 4 = 40
photo 5 = 40
photo 6 = NSL

These are the speed limits at each pole/cameras so you can see the changes are between 3 & 4 and 5 & 6

Does all this make sense.

If an average speed section is marked as variable what alert is given and what speed does STA or CA expect. Is making it all variable until the roadworks go an option

Regards

These may need to be processed for next week's database rather than today's Laughing Out Loud

I hate complex things like this. I'm tempted to do an FOI request about it but it seems trivial when councils are already struggling with funds to waste time on things like this for some random bloke in the north of England Laughing Out Loud

Just having a quick look now. Some of the locations have already been submitted

One of the comments is "Probably bi-directional. Speed as yet unknown - road was National Speed Limit, before they started upgrading it." implying they're potentially lowering the speed limits?

A local road near mine was 50 and NSL 70 but when they got average speed cameras they lowered the whole stretch to 50 to make camera placement and calculations easier....

If the 40 is temporary then I think it's probably going to go back to 60 on the whole stretch once the roadworks are done?

I'll mark as 60 and 40 for now but will need you to update the cameras once the roadworks are finished and things potentially change :D

According to this article it's staying as 60 once complete: https://www.northdevongazette.co.uk/news/home/1632902/council-responds-to-criticism-over-new-a361-speed-cameras.html

I thought along those lines as the NSL signs are permanent structures and the 40 ones are removable.

The roadworks are being cleared quite quickly now that the major upgrade is nearing completion so will update as soon as possible
