Speed cam warnings with no route set?

I have a drivesmart 50 which I’ve used for many years now.
I’ve recently started using a Carpod Go display unit in my car to be able to use carplay and Waze for better routing and traffic.
I’ve been using the camera alert app to give the verbal speed cam warnings via CarPlay.
It works well but the thing I miss on longer journies is having the visual location of the speed cams also display on the map.

Now I could set my phone up in a cradle to display the map using camera alert on the phone screen alongside the waze display on the carpod go unit, but I don’t really want to do that.

I thought I could still use the Garmin drivesmart unit when doing longer trips to just display the map and camera alerts but without setting a route.
I tried it but I get no camera alerts at all.

Is there a setting I’m missing on the Garmin to allow this?

I have a Camper 890 and a 760 before that and the Camera alerts have always worked when just viewing the map screen and no route planned
