With car headunits now supporting Android Auto and similar it's not surprising as you say

I removed my Garmin some time ago because Google Maps with satellite view, instant traffic and a better destination database is far better

I haven't fired up my Garmin 2599 or DS61 for months. Not sure where they are currently as I'm mostly boxed up pending a house move next month

Agreed. RIP the SatNav.

I only use a dedicated GPS once or twice a year now, that's using my ancient TomTom Rider when doing a long trip on my motorbike.

Apps like Waze and OsmAnd+ offer me far more versitility.

I'm not sure how big TomTom got in North America though - most people that way, in my experience, used Garmin and it was often used as the 'go to' name for a SatNav (like how we call all vacuum cleaners 'Hoovers' regardless of brand).

Will be interesting to see if Garmin do similar and/or TomTom stop sales in Europe as well.

Yes, but I think tomtom only ever produced road satnavs. Garmin also cover the marine and hiking/hunting markets which i guess are still quite popular.

Maybe?

Maybe this thread's title should be "RIP TomTom GPS PND's AND the PGPSWorld TomTom PND section" because, apart from little old me being the only one to start a new thread here in the LAST 5 YEARS FFS (I'm not looking for praise, just stating a fact) nobody else seems interested in joining in or having anything to say about TT PND's so it really does seem to be the end of the line (although there are still forums out there telling owners how to continue getting new maps etc for free, even on older devices) so don't hold your breath or rely on me for announcing when new postcodes/zipcodes and/or maps are released by TT Mad

In a similar vein I've now ditched my 2 Garmin units

After over a year of non use the batteries went dead and wouldn't hold a charge

My latest car has Android Auto Google Maps and I link STA to my car headunit which announces the cameras

The PND market must be getting smaller for all makes

Still use my GO620 in the works vans as they don't have satnav.
All other vehicles I use Android auto with Tomtom and Waze.

My GO6000 has now stopped showing traffic, I assume they’ve deactivated the SIM, as I’ve only used it on long trips and I’m retired now. I’m happy with the mobile version on my phone. It’s a shame I can’t use the phone to supply the data on the PND, I didn’t think of that when I bought it.

From memory they used Vodafone and they switched off their 3G signal a few months ago.

Thanks MaFt, I hadn’t thought of that, I just assumed they were being awkward 😊

With Vodafone phone contract I received their notification that 3G was being discontinued, indeed had already done so, so I felt concern about Traffic. However, I’m still getting it on my built in Renault R-Link which is TomTom. I haven’t used my GO for a little while but it still had Traffic (lifetime free). I’ll fire it up for a test some time soon.

I believe the satnav must be switched on and a traffic report downloaded every 180 days to keep the sim active. It may be worth contacting Tomtom to get it activated again.
