I have a Toshiba e740 Pocket PC and a Pharos GPS system. The receiver
is using Serial/USB port to connect to the Pocket PC. Whenever I try to enable GPS in the navigation software (Ostia), I got following message:
"Unable to open the selected communication port. Either the port
does not exist ot being used by other application. Close the application
accessing the port of try other port."
I followed the suggestion from PharosGPS web site to make
sure that I installed the driver correctly, I checked off the infrared beaming. I am not using any external device with the Pocket PC. I did soft reset many times. But I just cannot make it work. When I set the port to COM3 (I know it is worng), I would not see the error message, but it has no signal at all. I also rechargeed the battery to full and tried everthing again. None of them worked.
Is there anyone has seen the similar problem? Thanks.

COM3 is actually correct for the Toshiba's (not COM1), so you are connecting to the right port, but you may not be connecting at the correct baud rate or protocol (NMEA or SiRF). |

Thanks! I will try again. Can you tell me how to set up the parameters? Actually the gps receiver was working a couple of months ago on COM1, and the manual said it works on COM1. |

You may need to check with Pharos about the protocol and speed, but most apps will use NMEA 4800 or NMEA 9600, it all depends on what they use and what the GPS has been programmed to.
I'd be a bit surprised at it working on COM1 as I thought the Toshiba's used COM3.
Does the manual say whether to use NMEA or SiRF and which baud speed ? |
