Is it possible to run it without it updating itself? |

No, it's what Garmin deem a 'critical update' so you have to update. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Is there a map update or anything else that I can do without? |

Depends on your device but no new CN map. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Look what happens when you let the Garmin developers work from home
As an aside, whilst doing some housekeeping, it seems that you no longer need the Garmin USB drivers since the MTP devices came out.
Uninstalled mine and all still OK. _________________ DashCam:

Really? Nothing new on mine. If you mean the blue circles with numbers in top right of the device on the home screen they've been there for a while. |
Until this update, I had never seen a way to see download progress. With this release I got a download progress bar. _________________ Garmin Drivesmart 50 LMT-D App 5.90

Happened last time as well ...............
As soon as I started GE I got a popup telling me there is a new version available and do I want to install it. I answer 'Yes' but it does nothing.
Then I go to about/help where it tells me there is a new version and it installs AOK from there.
In my best English ..... Gotted |
I've found that although nothing appears to be happening after saying 'Yes', the update is downloading in the background. I know this because I have a network switch right next to the computer and can see the lights flickering. Eventually the accept dialogue box pops up and away the installation goes.
This is the only program, that I can recall, that doesn't show any indication that something is happening! |
Sorry couldn't find a way to link to this previous post. Did something other change, between then and now, or did I miss something?

New version just released allows you to view updates without device connected, seems it wasn't deliberate _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Good old Garmin QA testing strikes again.
No wonder we get so many updates. _________________ DashCam:

And talking of updates, Garmin's released 7.0.1.
Release notes as follows:
- Fixed an issue that prevented users from being able to redeem voucher codes for maps.
- Fixed an issue that prevented users from selecting View Details for a map update if their device was disconnected.
Hopefully they've fixed the ability to view maps AND the updates when the unit's disconnected.
Postnote - Yay - they've fixed it (but shouldn't have broken it in the first place) _________________ DriveLuxe 51 LMT D - Firmware 6.80
