Home Office data indicates that 2,386,780 drivers were caught speeding in England and Wales in 2018-19.
It was 4% higher than in the same period before, but a massive 37 percent rise on the 1,740,217 reported in 2011-12.
A huge 97% of the offences were detected by speed cameras.
The figures reveal that 34% of those captured received fixed penalty notices, 44% were sent on a speed awareness course and 12% were cancelled. 10% ended in court action.
Analysis of the data was carried out by Liverpool John Moores University and the RAC Foundation.
Steve Gooding of the RAC Foundation cited a statistic from 2018: "Exceeding the speed limit was recorded as a contributory factor in 13% of fatal crashes in Great Britain where at least one factor was identified." _________________ Robert Brady |

Cars are getting quieter, faster, and more economical on fuel every year, so no surprise that people are driving faster because it feels safe and comfortable.
The chances of getting caught speeding is also very low, so that would mean that more drivers are breaking the speed limits. _________________ GO 620, Tomtom Android EU,

Are people really driving faster? I have noticed that on motorways at least, the days of many cruising at 80+ are gone, only a few really push it, with most keeping it down to around or below the standard prosecution threshold.
I think (without evidence : ) that
1. The chances of being caught are much higher as the number of speed cameras increases, and the use of mobile cameras makes it easier to catch people unawares.
2. Speed limits are tending to come down (rather than speeds going up), so what appears to be a nice, open country A road finds itself as a 50 or even 40 limit, and thus more people end up exceeding that limit. |

It is very easy to not realise your speed these days. Modern cars are nice places to be.
There are still the band who do 80+ in their outside lane regardless but cameras do seem to have an effect.
The M4 Specs zones speeders are coming down week on week. The NIP's have presumably been received and word is getting out. _________________ DashCam:

I would have thought that the big notices and a plethora of yellow cameras would have been the clue there K. |

Doesn't seem to worry some. Then there's the others who slow down for the Specs then zoom off again.
Motorway Specs aren't as noticeable as your local Gatso or Monitron. They are high up, set back, on a thin yellow pole and unlike us here who understand these things they just blast on by. _________________ DashCam:
