While some UK areas, and indeed whole countries, are happy to leave inoperative speed cameras in place to successfully fool motorists into reducing their speed, the Isle of Wight, thinks differently.
The three fixed devices are being removed several years after they were taken out of active service.
A Isle of Wight police spokesperson said: "The fixed cameras have been inspected and are at the end of their serviceable life As such, it has been agreed with our partners at Isle of Wight Council and Island Roads these should now be removed."
A council spokesperson said: "Based on a recent inspection, the housing units have reached the end of their serviceable life. The condition of the casings is such that they now require replacement. Rather than meet the cost of installing and maintaining empty casings, the Isle of Wight Council has agreed that all speed camera housing units on the island will be removed."
The police will continue to use mobile speed cameras operated from vans. _________________ Robert Brady |

It is not just three camera locations being removed.
It is two at Horsebridge Hill,Newport, one at Wootton High Street,Wootton Bridge, one at St Johns Hill, Ryde, two at Lake near the school, one on the road past Wilton Garage, entering Shanklin, one on Victoria Road exiting Shanklin to Newport. |

I wonder if they will publish offending/accident statistics for the year after they've been removed.
Plus any related injury hospital admission stats. _________________ DashCam:

It's almost impossible to speed on the IoW anyway. The locals do seem to drive pretty slowly, so it's inevitable that you'll soon be behind some granny pootling along in their Honda Jazz at 30mph, no matter what road you are on. |

Careful, or I'll tell Mrs. M8 that you said that K.
The little old 1400cc engine in it is not quite as nippy as my 1500 turbo 180odd BHP Civic though. |

Honda have left the UK due to pensioners now driving Mercedes or Land Rovers.
You will need to upgrade from your flat cap Honda Civic. _________________ GO 620, Tomtom Android EU,
