Thanks for that advice which, like a lot of things, does make sense when you stop and think about it. On the few occasions when I tow a trailer on the motorway and overtake a lorry doing 56 mph, I'm worried that I won't see the "flash in" and therefore won't give them a left-right-left indicator as a thank you and thus be considered ungrateful! Embarassed

Like you and your colleagues, I don't expect car drivers to flash me in when I'm towing. Funnily enough caravan towers tend not to flash you in either, they also tend not to thank you when they overtake you! Rolling Eyes

I think that all new drivers should be made to cycle, ride a motorbike, tow a caravan, drive an LGV, etc so that they get a perception of the things that other road users may have to deal with.

The old method used to be turning headlights off, wait a second, then back on again. It's what other trucks used to do to each other.

This flashing must be a new method and could be misinterpreted ?

I still turn off the headlights and more than not get a thank you from the truck driver.

Unless it's raining or other poor weather conditions, I don't drive with my headlights on during the day. Smile

Rule 236 of the Highway Code states: "You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights.

"You MUST switch them off when visibility improves."

Drivers may be required to use their headlights during the day during periods of heavy rain, fog or snow and visibility can be reduced significantly.

Failing to comply with this rule can see the drive land an on-the-spot fine of £50.

One caveat to the rule is that in built-up 30mph areas where roads are adequately lit by street lights that are around 180-metres apart, they may not be required.
Why is everything so complicated in this country? why not make rules simple?

Indicator flashing as a thank you after passing came over from Europe. It does make a lot of sense as the switchgear is designed to work like that whereas a normal rocker switch wasn't. In daylight it used to be a single or sometimes double switch on of the sidelights and at night it was off-on-off-on. Now with the adoption of the continental way, the headlights never need to be extinguished and if someone is confused by or misinterpret a couple of indicator flashes they are probably a bit thick or too close... or both!
