I'm looking to upgrade my Garmin PND, but can't decide which is best for traffic updates - Smartphone or Digital.
Any advice would be helpful

The -D models can use either ..... unless they've changed it recently _________________ DashCam:

So could you have both connect at the same time? _________________ Keith

I don't know about now, but about three years ago, running both at the same time caused the Garmin to hang. |

Define "best"
For example, if you're venturing out of the UK, the SmartphoneLink has much wider coverage. (https://www.garmin.com/en-GB/traffic/)
(Either of them are better than the old RDS-based service, which frequently stopped receiving any information.)
My experience of Digital traffic was limited to the Nuvi 3598 - where "M5 is closed, switching to an alternative route" was its favourite catchphrase (even though said road wasn't closed at all).
I use the SmartPhone link with the Zumo on my bike (though "traffic" no longer applies to me then - it gives added benefits, like being able to have Donald Trump's tweets read to me, in the middle of a 90mph bend |
