|
|
Hi all, I currently have a GO 1005 & need to upgrade, as my map is quite old now. I want to be able to:
Change the car icon to one I created
Add speed cameras which I download from this site
Add my own POIS
Is this all still posible with a newer version, & which one is it. Have Googled the life out of it without any luck. Sugestions anyone. I don't think TomTom quite grasp how the things they take away influence the buyer. I will have to consider a new product if I can't update my maps! Thanks. |

In a word - No.
Allegedly you can add POIs, but you can't do anything with them, e.g. warn when near, which is what you need for the cameras here to work. You can't add your own car icon. For your POIs, you can add "Places", which work like Favourites - you can search/choose one and navigate to it, but you don't get different categories (you can't have a set for banks, for supermarkets, for business customers, everything is just Places).
You just can't do any of that with the newer TomToms. And a helluva lot more (less!!) that you can't do.
TomTom are not interested in grasping how things they take away influence the buyer - probably because buyers are still buying new TomToms. One has to wonder who the new buyers are - I'm guessing people who have no knowledge of what TTs used to be like and don't know what they are missing. Makes your heart ache!
If you want to stick with TT user interfaces, get a new one which comes with lifetime free map updates, but run our cameras on your smartphone (free download and then link it to your existing account). It actually works even better than on a TomTom. _________________ Dennis

The best TomTom to get is a Garmin _________________ Garmin Drivesmart 51 LMT-D Europe |

I had a Garmin once, but took it back to exchange for a TT because the GUI looked amateur and because whenever I got within a few miles of Wales, it rabbitted on about borders and maps. I live fairly close to Wales so it happened regularly.
Having said which, TTs are now pretty dire feature wise, nothing like what I loved 15 years ago! _________________ Dennis

I have to agree with you Dennis, I preferred the TomTom, but the features I wanted haven't been available for many years now, so there is no choice really. I'm used to the Garmin now, although sometimes the routing can be a bit weird _________________ Garmin Drivesmart 51 LMT-D Europe |

Sadly, my trusty GO520 of 2005 finally died three days ago. I'm gutted and must now press on without it. So many good things, of which I mostly used the view map and/or route and the remote control. Custom car logo, grandchildren's voices warning of upcoming cameras. At least it survived long enough to take full use of the extended map update service which lasted until map v1025. There was only one thing wrong with it, it didn't have Live Traffic.
I shall survive, with just my Renault R-Link TomTom and my GO6200, but driving won't be as convenient or reliable as it was. _________________ Dennis

In your game couldn't you run a TT and Garmin to get the best of both.
TT for routing whilst getting upcoming cameras from Garmin. _________________ DashCam:

Thanks everyone. looks like I'm stuck with an out of date map until TomTom buckles or I get lost too many times! |

I already run two other devices, built in R-Link (Renault/TomTom), and TT GO6200, for routing (so with the dead GO520 I got three routes!). But I use CamerAlert on my iPhone for the cameras. _________________ Dennis

Yes, CA on a car linked phone is the best solution.
I only opted for another Garmin so I can still see the cameras 'in the distance and getting closer' before CA gives me the verbal warning.
I don't know whether TT is similar but my DS61 has a nice feature that flashes up info messages like 'school zone ahead' and 'speed limit change ahead' which wasn't on the previous models. _________________ DashCam:

Just to say that thanks to Dennis' excellent advice I now use CA for speed cameras on my old MotoG4 because my superb TT 750 LIVE could not be updated anymore and its battery was failing anyway. I have replaced it with a TT GO Premium X because I wanted TT Traffic & TT routing & as a long term TT user TT made me an offer I couldn't refuse.

I have exactly the same solution Jack and find it works well. just a shame we now have to have two units running to achieve the same results as previous. _________________ Happy Lexus GS450h owner |

Hi. Only just read this post but I also have an 1005.
I've resisted upgrading and I just buy an update to the maps. I actually get the camping maps as I tow a caravan but until it dies or becomes unsupported and can't update maps or traffic anymore I will probably keep using it.
I've tried CA connected through my car and it does work well so I do have that as a back up in case I do have to upgrade.
Realise it's not the most cost effective way of doing it as the new TT's have lifetime maps and traffic so could probably get my money back in a few years |
