A Freedom of Information request to the Devon and Cornwall Police has revealed that large numbers of motorists are being caught out by new average speed cameras.
Over 2,500 speeding drivers have been ticketed in the first 100 days of point-to-point devices going live on the South Devon Highway. 500 were caught in the first week alone.
A local County Councillor said: "It needs to be remembered why we have a 50mph speed limit on the road – it is for the amenity of those local residents. Obviously the new South Devon Highway is a road that affected the lives of hundreds of lives of people in South Devon for the better. But some people’s lives have been blighted since the new road opened as their houses are next to the road. The noise and pollution from the road is horrendous and it has a 50mph speed limit, but everyone ignores it."
He added: "The main thing needed is the average speed cameras, and I really welcome this and my residents really welcome this and looking for a good night’s sleep." _________________ Robert Brady |

I think education on the average speed cameras must be very poor, I use my sat nag to give me my true speed and drive to that allowing me a little overtaking, but people still pull in behind me flashing to get past, I pull over and they flash past like the idiots they are.
While on the subject of limits, 30MPH limit, if it so important to stick withing this limit, why only one sign which in amongst all the proliferation of signs we have to endure these days, why not post repeats like the 40MPH ones? could it be they would lose revenue? |

The repeats are called street lighting, and they occur much more frequently than those for 40mph. |

I'd rather look at traffic and where I'm going than look at street lights, but thanks anyway. |

Do satnavs tell us we are within an average zone and so keep reminding us about our speed, once we have past the start camera position? |

TomToms claim to do so, but in my experience they are VERY unreliable, not just the matter of not being up to date, but also unlike CamerAlert, they do not recalculate at each camera location.
Pgpsw CamerAlert recalculates at each camera - remember, official average cameras check between “any two cameras”, not just from start. _________________ Dennis

Another vote for CA (on Android) from me.
It just keeps on nagging until you slow down. _________________ DashCam:

In 40 + zones I set the Cruise control but at 30 it struggles unless I'm in 3rd gear. |
