Average speed cameras are planned to monitor Britain's most high risk road.
A national study by the Road Safety Foundation has identified a seven-mile stretch of road in Derbyshire as the primary 'persistently higher risk road' out of 75 which has had an average of at least one fatal or serious crash per mile during the three-year study period.
The road in question is Buxton's A5004 to Whaley Bridge which has witnessed 16 fatal and serious crashes between 2012-17.
The research also found that it had the same number of fatal and serious crashes between 2015-2017 as in 2012- 2014.
A Derbyshire County Council spokesman said: "The Long Hill stretch of the A5004 between Buxton and Whaley Bridge is popular with motorcyclists because of the challenging nature of the road with its multiple twists and turns. Of the eight crashes resulting in one death and seven serious injuries between 2015 and 2017, 88% involved motorcyclists and reasons for the collisions include riders being unfamiliar with the layout of the road. There were no accidents resulting in death or serious injury on this road in 2018."
He added: "Last year we were awarded £2,540,000 from the Government's Safer Roads Fund to improve road safety at this location and we are currently developing plans to put extra safety measures in place. These are likely to include removing a sharp bend, improving signage and road markings and installing rumble strips and average speed cameras. We will also be putting in BikeGuard safety barriers which prevent motorcyclists sliding under existing safety barriers."
Taking the dubious honour of second place is the 30 miles long A3055 in the Isle of Wight with 65 fatal or serious crashes.
The third was the five mile A645 near Wakefield, West Yorkshire, with 22 fatal or serious crashes.

Average speed cameras will have little impact on this road as like the cat and fiddle for the average driver/riders to meet the average speed means exceeding the limit on the straights. As for rumble strips, as a biker I hate them, they unsettle the bike tend to be in braking zones so can trigger ABS is damp weather, and do nothing to add to safety of the one group of road users they are trying to address. Once again desk jockeys in charge of the real world. If they want to improve safety for Bikers they need to talk to bikers.

Yes, rumble strips are a complete waste of public money that should instead be spent on better road surfacing (ie fewer pothole hazards).
Good signage is sufficient warning of hazards, for all sighted drivers.
I do indeed see the point about hampering motorcycles in the braking zone.
For pedal cyclists as well, the rumble strips are really annoying because they bash you hard if you ride over them.
But if you try to avoid them by riding down the left gutter, you are often stymied because they've put the rumbles all the way across there.
..And you can't avoid them on the other side of the road either, because they've put the rumbles right across there as well - where they simply should not be.
