Could a POI category be added for boat marinas?
If one exists already, could someone tell me where it is? I looked through the POI categories, searched the site as well as viewed a couple of marinas on the free POI map but could not see any.
Thanks,
John. |

Thanks Robert for the quick reply.
I am not aware of a list with GPS coordinates but am happy to start with postcodes and convert them to GPS coordinates knowing they will be close-ish but with a margin of error but fix what I can, and email a list to get things started.

Hi John,
In my experience, postcodes are not that accurate although they are useful for quickly finding the approximate location so that you can fine tune the POI to be accurate.
I like to create POIs that allow me to drive as close as possible to a Place of Interest and use the correct drive entrance. This is done by:
1. Searching in Google Earth Pro (place name, postcode, coordinates, etc)
2. Checking in Google Streetview
3. Using OpenStreetMap
The use of OpenStreetMap is for when a place may not have Google Streetview (i.e. the whole of Guernsey, Channel Islands) and it is an alternative to Google maps and Google Earth because the map is compiled by a different source, i.e. the community. This process allows me to remotely (i.e. whilst sitting at my office desk) accurately create POIs for almost anywhere in the world.
I then place the coordinates, POI name, telephone number, etc, in an Excel spreadsheet which has columns for creating URLs for the following:
1. Google Maps URL
2. OpenStreetMap URL
3. TomTom MyDrive URL
4. Here We Go URL
The URLs for Google Maps and OpenStreetMap show the POI on the relative maps for checking you have the location correct, as you can check against map (or satellite view). Whilst the URLs for TomTom MyDrive and Here We Go show whether the POI is navigatable with the most recent SatNav maps.

Hi Robert,
Agreed and so do I, but given the number of them we are talking days of work that will take a month or two for all, or add a small number that I know. What is PGPSW's preference given there is nothing currently in the database?
Am not trying to be difficult - just pragmatic and seeking clarity on priorities

How many marinas are there?
PGPSW's preference is what's best for you. It's just happy that POIs get submitted for the community to use.
I assume that as you've raised the question about marina POIs that you're interested in marinas! So you may have a few that you wish to initially visit and those could be the ones to submit first if you want to do it in batches. Alternatively, you could submit them all at once. As I said, it's probably what works best for you.
In fact, you don't need to submit all of them yourself - it can be a community effort! You can do just the ones that you need and let others submit the ones that they need.

No, fully understand. It's always best to be clear on these matters!
Hope this helps!

OK Thanks Robert,
There are quite a few - one website had around 270 and another more than 550
Given no-one has asked this before, I assume interest isn't that high so will work on an initial list to email through unless I can't get a decent workflow.

The last one I had published was Preserved Railways which was 244 separate Excel entries all checked and verified as correct to the actual vehicle access point. Takes a long time to do it properly. Postcodes alone are mostly hopeless for navigation and will need fine tuning using GE/Streetview to make the POI really work for the driver.
Pity my Truck Delearship - IVECO POI's never made it to the database but luckily it was only 83 entries I wasted time over... |
