It looks like the days of the Garmin are numbered as my new car comes equipped with a Sat Nav.

I don't know its details yet, but it seems OK - so far.

My ideal would be to transfer all my personal POIs/favourites, currently held via Basecamp to the car's satnav. If the car will accept Basecamp's KML export, we're in!

Lots of new cars have SatNav but try getting the cameras from here to work on most of them.

Mine has SatNav but I run the Garmin still as it's easier.

My old car (2006) has Satnav - a Kenwood unit which was a Garmin at heart. I think the Ford/Volvo/JLR system was the same. Garmin and Tom Tom started supplying the manufacturers many years ago e.g. Renault/Nissan have TomTomI believe.

However, I still use my Garmin or Co-Pilot on a day to day basis as it is up to date and have traffic. Plus CameraAlert!

The interface is a bit tedious unless I transmit the destination data from my phone to the car the data being held in the phones calendar.

I continue to use the Garmin alongside the in car satnav as I trust the Garmin more than the car system. The car system tends to route journeies from the north to Hampshire via the M25 even when more direct routes are shorter and quicker.

On holiday trips I run both systems in parallel with the in car system showing a smaller scale image and the Garmin showing only the next few miles or less in towns.

The Garmin does store the route taken and the data can be transfered to the computer for later review, the car system does not appear to maintain turn by turn history (it might be accessiible using expensive manufacturers equipment at the Volvo dealers)

I have an early built in sat nav but use the 3598 as I can mount it near my line of vision and quickly glance at route and more frequently speed. It is also easier to check than even the main speedometer, especially on continental driving where the car analogue display remains in MPH.

The other big downside for a lot of built in units is that they seem to have RDS traffic that is pants when compared to Garmin digital traffic, or TT traffic.

RDS is motorway and most A roads only and is often 15 to 30 minutes out of date. Garmin digital is 'all' roads in my experience and is updated every minute.

My 2699 allows me to spot upcoming cameras in my line of sight, top of dash, alongside the traffic.

= I still think standalone units have a purpose, especially when I read the tales of woe here of owners trying to get cameras onto their built in units and then to get them working as expected.

My Honda (Garmin RDS) showed me in slow moving traffic on Friday (I was) whilst the DAB Garmin satnav showed all clear. Go figure.

Did offer a number of reroutes to save time though, which generally worked Smile

My ex's 2 year old Seat has SatNav... It doesn't even have 7 digit postcode and the built in POIs are awful. Didn't even have Skegness Butlins on it (and it's not like it's new!!)
