A single speed camera is responsible for capturing more than 300 speeding drivers per week - it holds the record for the country.

The fixed camera has been triggered 51,049 times over three years whilst monitoring a 30mph limit on the A3024 Maybray King Way in Southampton.

The president of the breakdown service AA said: "A 30mph road generating the highest number of speed camera activations in England and Wales is astonishing."

A spokesman for the Alliance of British Drivers, argued that: "If a lot of people are being caught it may be that the speed limit on that road is ridiculously low."

Do you think that a high level of infringements on one stretch of road might signify that the limit is too low for that road?

I would say that 30mph seems a very low road speed for the conditions, I reckon that at least fifty-one thousand and forty-nine other drivers would agree.

Given that those yellow boxes stick out like a sore thumb I have to assume these drivers don't know the speed limit.

There aren't any 30 signs in view so it's the lamppost frequency that dictates, but, being a dual carriageway and no buildings I can see the issue.

30 mph reminders would be a good idea, but before the cameras. Cheap to install, but dramatically reducing revenue.
The road is a dual carriageway, with slip roads! No wonder people are caught out.

If you rotate the street view image by 180 degrees there is a lamp post covered in bunches of flowers. So accidents do happen on that road.
Agree that as it is a duel carriageway are should be lots of big signs...

I know these sets of cameras .. and yes they are a pain as most people are travelling 35-40 and then brake suddenly and bunch up to slow right down for them .. and then speed up straight after.

Interestingly the 'safety partnership' know this happens .. and so sometimes put a camera van there as well in order to catch people before they get to them, especially when coming out of Southampton towards Bitterne and J7 and/or 8 of M27.

The speed limit on these cameras is a dilema really because the traffic does actually flow at about 40 on this primary route in and out of Soton most of the time .. but .. there are lots of houses right on this dual carriageway with one car length drives ... and there is a short rossover/merging junction just after the bridge after the camera .. and so in truth, it is not unreasonable to try to keep the traffic speed down in peak times.

Whilst I don't know where the car drivers come from that get these speeding tickets .. these cameras are notorious in the area and so I wouldn't be at all surprised if a large proportion of those getting tickets are from outside of the area as this is the primary route in to the Southampton Football stadium as well as another for the Cruise Liners and shopping obviously.

Signage is pretty good in the area .. but perhaps should be improved if so many people are being 'criminalised' by these cameras.
