Folowing Routes

Is it just me, or is Memory Map pretty poor at following routes??

I took it out today on my (mountain) bike, along one of my usual routes, and set it to follow the route that I have already set up in MM.

Whilst I had plenty of strong signals form 5 or 6 sats, the direction arrow seemed to swing about all over the place. The recorded track was quite stable, so I don't think it is a GPS thing. There was a general bias towards the planned route, but if I had been just following the arrow, I would have been all over the place!

Perhaps there is a technique to setting up the routes - I tend to have lots of way points - 30 or so in a 12 mile ride - basically one at every slight change of direction. Should I thin them out a bit and accept the fact that the route itself doesn't necessarily follow the path??

Your thoughts/advice would be welcome.....

Having 5 or 6 sats doesn't yet mean much. They may be in an unfavorable constellation, and you may have foliage or other factors influencing the reception, making your position jump around.

This swinging about also happens if you have waypoints and you do not actually go through them.

If your waypoint for example is set to one side of a road and you are walking down the other (the distance between is the XTE - cross track error), the arrow will point to that waypoint. From a distance it will appear to be pointing ahead but as you approach the waypoint the arrow will rotate to point to the waypoint so that when you are level with it, the arrow will be at 90 degress on the screen.

It is only when MM realises that you are not going to actually go to the exact waypoint on the map and you are approaching the next waypoint, it will point you to the next waypoint.

You can avoid this by ensuring that the waypoints are actually on the route you are taking. If your GPS position is not exact on the map (eg always 25 metres to the left, you need to edit the maps properties to shift it so that the GPS position is accurate.
