The introduction of average speed cameras in Dublin Port Tunnel is reported to have had a massive impact on the speeds of 24,000 vehicles which travel through it daily.

Since the point-to-point system was introduced last year, police say that only 0.15 per cent of motorists using the 4.5km tunnel now travel at 10kmh over the limit of 80 kmh.

The Irish justice minister commented: "Prior to the introduction of this system, speed checks at Dublin Port Tunnel were conducted using handheld laser-based technology and required a garda presence to identify and intercept speeding vehicles. For safety reasons these checks could only be conducted outside the tunnel and, therefore, could not influence driver behaviour inside the tunnel itself".

A spokesman for AA Ireland’s said: "When used correctly, they work very well and make an awful lot of sense but they are most effective on motorways, which are statistically some of the safest roads on the network."

He added: "Traffic enforcement should be concentrated on black spots and it is not certain using more average speed camera systems on motorways would be an effective use of resources."

Yes, now the power crazed authorities have the toys to make us obey it is time to question the speed-limits that they are enforcing.

How are they set? Show me the science (real science not pressure group mumbo-jumbo). I predict there is no evidence to confirm the compromise between safety and speed is established as there isn't any that shows 'speed' is even a problem.

He really shouldn't worry, after all, Dublin is foreign and his passport will be invalid soon. Twisted Evil

I've been on the receiving end of his continual angst against sensible enforced speed limits.
I ignore it now as boy racer talk.
