had a tom tom for a few years till i bought my alpine 925 all in one.
i hate it, had it a about 4 years now. i love alpine but this one is pants
sat nav is a pain to navigate. when i had my tom tom i could use cameras and POIS off here amongst other things
so im looking at taking it out and putting back my jap head unit that came with my import. also hate the DAB on it as well. so going to get another pure highway dab as well
so what is a good unit to go for
need to put speed cams on and poi. need lane guidance and spoken street names, traffic will be handy but only really need uk maps for now |

You will not be able to put any third party speed cams on any new TT.
They have restricted cams to their own which appear to only be updated circa 6 monthly, or are 6 months behind with updates, according to what I've read. _________________ DashCam:

Just to pad out what Kremmen said a little. From what I have read, you can install our speedcams on some TomToms as POIs. This might sound like what you want to do, however, although they will (apparently) show up in your POI lists, there is not a mechanism for setting them up with proximity alerts, so they are about as much use as tits on a fish as a speed camera alert system.
Apparently, you can navigate to them though. |

And just to add to what Kremmen and M8TJT have said, whilst you can add POIs to some of the current range of TomTom PNDs, the POIs won't even show up on the navigation or map screens.
Current TomTom PNDs use something called MyDrive, which allegedly allows you to load your POIs to the TomTom PND so that you can navigate to them but not show them on the screen. I say allegedly because I don't have a current TomTom PND, I do have the latest version TomTom GO Mobile iOS on my iPhone and although it was released over two years ago it has only just had MyDrive added to it and even then, you still can't load POIs onto it!
If you want a SatNav that shows PGPSW speed cameras (with proximity alerts) your only choice is a Garmin PND and then get one with the LMT-D suffix as it'll have lifetime maps and digital traffic!

Hi Guys
After reading these posts I'm a little confused. I currently have a Start 25 (the model that is still supported). I use My Drive to load the speed camera data base from here and it works fine.
Obviously I use the community content facility to do this.
So my question is "Is it my drive that is the issue here or the software in the versions of TomTom sat nav?"

I don't think you are alone in your confused state of mind. Lots of people have thought along the same lines as you and have been disappointed.
Well if you are using My Drive to successfully load speed cams with alerts, it obviously isn't My Drive.
You could always buy your choice of TomTom from Amazon, and let us know how long it is before you send it back because it doesn't do what you want it to do. |

I'm going to chip in and probably muddy the waters further. My recollection is that Home was the interface for generation 1 & 2 tt's while MyDrive is the interface for generation 3 and above. However, there was a very brief moment when there was a kind of crossover Satnav which also used MyDrive. They had most of the functions of gen 1&2 while begining to show some of the signs of being locked down. A few Via's and Start's fell into this middle ground.
But, to reinforce all the other comments being made here. NO current TT allows you to add 3rd party Speed camera Poi's and to be able to use them in a meaningful way. It has been like that for several years now. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599
