Four smart motorway speed cameras on the M1 in Derbyshire have caught 8,382 speeding drivers between Tibshelf services and junction 29A at Duckmanton in 2017 - meaning they are the highest earning cameras in Derbyshire.
One driver was caught at 128mph in a 50mph zone in a BMW X5.
The most profitable camera was on the southbound carriage at Duckmanton, which recorded 2,472 speeders. At least £838,300 in revenue is expected from the prosecutions in total.
The road safety charity IAM RoadSmart, formerly called the Institute of Advanced Motorists, commented: "In our view the only numbers that should be important in relation to speed cameras are how many lives have they saved or whether crashes have been reduced. The best cameras catch no one because their message is self-explanatory and drivers can see instantly that there is a road safety problem that they should slow down for."
They added: "Any camera consistently catching thousands of drivers should be reviewed immediately to ensure it is clearly signed, well located and to identify a long term engineering solution that will actually allow it to be removed."

Weird statement. Why should a camera catching motorists be reviewed? Motorists shouldn't be speeding. End of.

I'm guessing because the official line of the UK Gov has always been that they are there for safety. If thousands of people are still speeding then it may imply the speed limit signs are not obvious etc. |

On smart motorways the current speed limit in force couldn't be more obvious - large matrix signs over each carriageway - or 70 when not lit.
Considering the number of vehicles that pass me when I am travelling at the legal limit on any road it is equally obvious that many drivers think they won't be caught.
Highways England are now warning that they will prosecute anyone passing a red X gantry sign. Another revenue raiser some will claim. |

My issue with this is that they put the X up 2- 3 miles before the incident, all that does is increase the queue length. Putting the X up 1/2 mile to a mile away would result in more people obeying without using a big stick, or less revenue because they are not stifling the traffic for longer than necessary. Add to that the times they forget to turn off the signs after the incident is cleared leaving people sitting in jams unnecessarily (it does happen, and frequently). Highways Agency needs to improve before they start beating people. Just my opinion as a 50,000+ nationwide miles a year driver.

As a fellow 50k+ a year driver, I have to disagree. It’s the selfish oafs belting along regardless under the red X or the closure arrows who cause the jams when they finish illegal undertaking and bully their way into the front of everybody else.
