New POI suggestion

I'd like to suggest a new POI for Defibrillators under the PGPSW Healthcare category.

They are springing up all over the place in my area and I think it is worthy of inclusion in our Free POI downloads.

What do members think?

I think Ambulance trusts will have a list. I used to work with the Welsh Amb Service and still volunteer for them. I went on a course a few weeks ago and it included a demo about the correct use of defibs. I'll give them a ring tomorrow to find out where I can get hold of a list, at least for South and West Wales or even the whole of Wales.

It should be fairly easy as each parameter is clearly labelled.
name:, address:, description, :map_lat:, map_lng: Simples. Very Happy

My local one is 6th on the list.

I've got a school meeting this morning but I might contact them to see if we can use the data as a one off and then let them use our community updates for location tweaks etc.

PS - the data is in JSON formatting so I could probably write a PHP script that pulls out all the data and formats it correctly and inserts it into the POI database so hold off any work for now.

Really? is it worth the effort? I feel for Richard if this is taken forward.

I know that if I was with anyone who was suffering an heart attack , I would just call the emergency services, listen to and act upon the advice that they would be giving me , I certainly would not be consulting the PgpsW site for the nearest defibrillator location, manhandle the patient off to the point and then give CPR.

To me its Bonkers EU legislation gone mad. Are there any stats that substantiate the worth of these Defib stations?

Don't get me wrong, It's great if everybody hapens to know their local defibrillator point just in case a situation occurs and they are very, very nearby, but seriously, are we promoting that members look up POIs rather than just calling 999, 112 or 911?

You wouldn't need to look them up as a Garmin can be set to display them as you drive. Locally you could then get to know where they are and if driving anywhere it may at least give you an idea should one be needed. Wouldn't be wanted by everyone though, then again what POI category ever is Wink

@sussamb, If I read between your lines. Are you saying that the defib locations are a half way meeting point?

i.e. I don't call 999 but I should check the SatNav/POIs, get the patient to the defib point, carry out he initial treatment and then await the paramedics who have only been alerted because I have used the equipment which is possibly 5 miles away and possibly 5 miles/5-10 minutes in the wrong direction?

No, but if one is close by its worth grabbing if you can. Earlier a shock is delivered the better the chance of survival.

Agreed. But local knowledge is the key.

I feel that if you are looking for a petrol station, a cash machine, a kebab shop, etc. the PgpsW POIs are great, but if if it comes to a life or death situation, call 999 immediately.

Unless you already know where your local defib point is and that you are certain that taking your patient there is their best chance of survival don't waste time by looking up POIs.

Of course dial 999 immediately. It's what can be done before the arrival of ambulance aid that can make a difference though.
