A Member of the Scottish Parliament, Liam Kerr, has questioned whether the almost £44,000 bill for promoting the safety benefits of speed cameras is money well spent.
Transport Scotland is promoting the use of 30 average speed cameras on a 50-mile stretch of the A90 Aberdeen to Dundee road.
£43,853 has been spent on the awareness initiative since March.
Whilst agreeing that safety was vital, Kerr went on to say: "I think many taxpayers will rightly ask if spending £44,000 on a PR exercise to promote these cameras is a sensible use of resources."
He added: "Evidence from the police suggests that average-speed cameras may not have prevented almost half the accidents on the A90 in recent years. Many crashes happen at junctions, private entrances and roundabouts – with vehicles often not moving fast enough to be detected by these fixed devices."
The Scottish Government’s Transport Minister argued: "I am astounded Liam Kerr believes that spending money in order to stop people from dying on our roads is a waste of resource. Average-speed cameras have reduced fatalities."

Average Speed Cameras have been with us for some time and their use will probably spread in the future. There really is no excuse now for drivers who do not understand how these cameras work.
I don't know the cost for a RTC where a death occurs but just for the emergency services the cost most be in excess of £44,000 then you add the cost of lost time caused by the inevitable traffic queue then £44,000 sounds better to educate than have a death caused by a RTC.
The alternative would be to spend more than £44,000 and have a one or more marked police cars (with traffic officers) regularly patrol the A90 to not only catch speeders but any bad drivers. Perhaps the revenue from the A90 average speed cameras could pay for the police!
