One of the last TomToms to take the PGPSW speed cameras was the VIA 135. It's still available from Argos for £119.99 with free lifetime Europe maps. _________________ Anita

Clicking the link, Anita, it now shows £89.99. I guess they haven't got many left if they're reducing the price. #temptedifIonlyhadspaceonmywindscreen. _________________ Dennis

A bargain!
I'm very happy with mine, and hope it outlasts me. If not, and I'm still driving, I'll probably use an app on my Android phone, as the current TTs don't fulfill my needs and I'm not going to switch to Garmin. _________________ Anita

Probably less than I paid for my trusty One V3 UK in 2007. Might be tempted although I did promise never to give TT any more £ after cutting me off. _________________ Garmin Drive 51LMT-S EU

if you ever switch to mobile you have a few choices - TT (yearly or every 3 years subs) but you have the same bugs, etc as you do with the PND devices, Sygic (can buy lifetime service and at moment they have black friday deals on) this uses TT maps and traffic
you can then use CamerAlert on the mobile to warn of cameras
Waze is also supposed to be good and free, but I only tried it a couple of times and didn't like it
There is also the Navigon app but not sure how good this is and is from garmin |

Thanks, Walkerx. From the demo on their website it would take a bit of getting used to after using TomTom for so many years, but at £14.99 I might just buy it and use it on familiar routes to see how I get on.
How do other people get on with Sygic? _________________ Anita

It depends on whether you want to load your own POIs and/or alerts. I've used Sygic and removed it.
The most flexible is Mapfactor Navigator which can use OSM or TomTom maps. OSM maps are updated monthly. It also allows you to tailor your road use to get rid of being sent up single track roads. Setting up POIs is initially a bit of a faff but, once done, easy. The only problem is that you need to convert the speeds to Km/h if you want warnings or use Camera Alert.
Co-Pilot is good and now allows the import of speed cameras and warnings.
I've also used MagicEarth (ex-Route 66), Navitel and Dynavix. They all have their quirks! |

Hi Anita,
Give the TomTom GO Mobile app a try but you'll probably ditch it quickly.
The TomTom GO Mobile iOS app is so awful that it's hard to find any good about it except TT Traffic which is OK but everything else is just plain bad: The maps are bloated with 3D buildings; serious lagging (then over correction) at junctions and roundabouts; no custom POI support (not even MyDrive); no URL scheme so can't launch from another app; etc.
I realise that you have an Android phone but I can't see the Android version of TomTom being much better than the iOS version.
Also, TomTom have a history of determining life expectancy of its products. The VIA 135 is rather an old model so it will probably very so be unsupported by TomTom.

If you do go for a product on Android, make sure that it downloads the maps you need (an expansion card is a good idea!). Some, like Waze, Google etc. don't or for a limited time. This means you need a data connection to see where you are going.
You can download most of the products and have full functionality for about 7 days. Traffic and TomTom maps tend to be at a cost but much less than a dedicated SatNav. |
