I was looking on here with a the same question as the original poster. My in-built satnav is a waste of time for camera warnings as the visual alert is too small, and I don't want to use audible alerts as I can't remove the in-built camera database, so will get a beep from both in-built database (which is woefully out of date) and pocketGPS database, plus it's not directional, so I get beeps in both directions - so on a road that I use every day, with 3 speed cameras on each sde of the road, I get 12 beeps in rapid succession, which isn't exactly helpful.
So what I am after is something which is quite small and discreet - phones are too large - shows minimal information (distance to camera & speed perhaps - but actually just a warning light would do) and doesn't have a fixed built in database so I only get alerts from PocketGPS. No interest at all in laser detectors etc, purely GPS alerts.
It may be that such a device doesn't exist (and I've yet to work through the forum for suggestions) in these days of smartphones, but I can hope. |

The only thing that will fit your bill is a cheap Android smartphone with the CA app. It only uses data in map mode, so you don't even need a contract. Updates can be done by WiFi. |

OK, thanks. Problem these days is that phones are quite big, but I suppose realistically, because of smartphones, the demand for a standalone device would be very low (possible just 2 - myself and OP )
Thanks for the reply anyway |

Hi actd,
As M8TJT said, a cheap Android smart phone is the best bet.
Pop into your local super store (i.e. Tesco, Sainsbury, ASDA, etc) and have a look at the cheap PAYG mobile phones. If you're going to use the phone for just camera alerts then you don't need to worry about topping up the phone and you should get a reasonably small Android smart phone.
Get an air vent mount and USB charge lead and you should have a decent GPS camera detector!

Presumably you are talking Garmin here? But the PGPSW database on a Garmin is not directional. On a phone running CA it is. |
