In which case, why does it bother you? |

My 2589 came with Full Europe and, up until now, has been updated with Full Europe despite it appearing there was insufficient capacity before starting the download.
So, as it has not been offered at updates how do I change to Western Europe with which I would be happy? |

Delete the EU map and then add a file or files that fill up enough space so that there isn't sufficient space for the full EU map. Then Express will ask you to either insert a card or select a smaller region.
However if Europe fits I'd just be tempted to keep it. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

What I did was to rename that massive .img file in the map folder.
Because the filename was unknown it didn't consider it valid for removal so told me I needed a sd card, or, select another map region from a selection in a dropdown box it produced. _________________ DashCam:

I'm resurrecting an old thread following my struggles with Garmin EXpress and maps 2023.10.
I eventually gave up with my Win 8 desktop, installed the latest GE on my Win 10 laptop and successfully installed the Europe maps on my Nuvi 2598 and thought RESULT (of a sort, as I found no option for installingthe maps to the PC for use with Basecamp - grrr)
HOWEVER, when I looked at the Nuvi on Windows explorer I saw that the device has only 12Mb of unused storage, while the 8gb microSD has around 4Gb spare. The effect of this of course is that the 2598 runs v..e..r..y slowly when finding a long route and, doubtless, if I try the 3 Routes option it will stall altogether.
The obvious option is to start again and but GE now has no option to manage maps (too complex for some users?). The obvious solution is to delete the old maps (North Europe) from the device and then to install only part of North Europe (South Europe is happy on the card) - or to simply delete the whole lot, put in a larger card and put all the maps on the card - if GE will let me!
BUT - HOW DO I DELETE THE MAPS. As I recall there ws a trick to seeing them inWindows explorer which involved booting the device up in Mass Storage mode but I cannot remember how.
PLEASE - how do I remove the maps to start again? |

My problem seems to be going from bad to worse. I have now found my way to Mass Storage mode to be able to see the map files in Windows Explorer and am astounded to see that the latest date (modified) are 29 September 2021 - and that is for both the img file for the Europe North map on the device AND for the Europe South img file on my card. Given that I loaded the maps yesterday those file dates seem odd. The gma and unl files have assorted dates of 22/04/17, 21/02/18, 14/03/19, 23/12/19, 03/03/20, 04/06/21 and 29/09/21.
I can accept that not all map tiles will have updates but ....... ??
For the sake of relevance I am now transferring this problem to the thread on the release of the 2023.10 EU map and will repeat the essence of this post there. |

Thanks, Kremmen - between posting my question and your response I tried another search, this time for "mass storage", which directed me to the volume and top right trick which I had forgotten. However, as you will see if you look at the tread on 2023.10 maps, that has created even more questions --- GRRR
Hopefully Sussamb may have views on the deletions - he has mentioned deleting a few posts up this thread. I suppose that as long as the img file can be deleted then the gma and unl files are small enough to be ignored and could be given another suffix so that the Nuvi ignores them. Then one could see if a map reinstall recreates them. |

If the date of .gma and .unl codes don't match the date of the .img files they can be deleted. I'll try to help on your other posts but the dates for the .img files aren't correct for updated maps. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |
