Best hardware for database

Which stand alone speed camera detector is best for pocketGPS database?
As in, not a sat nav but a designated detector, like the old Novus or Snooper detectors?
Do any of these types of unit support the database?

If not, which sat nav unit might be best to use in this way, e.g no map or navigation, just audible sound warnings that might mean you can use the detector without it being on dashboard etc?

The database is NOT a detector. It is a list of cameras together with their locations by latitude and longitude. You need a GPS enabled thingy to stick it onto, so that the thingy's GPS location can be used to say there's a camera "here".

Apart from a satnav, a good alternative would be a smartphone or iPhone with GPS. CamerAlert is available to download free of charge, with a copy of the latest version of the database. It is updated daily/weekly and requires a subscription to download updates.

Let me try asking a different way...

Which stand alone /designated detector can I use the database on (not a satnav, not a smart phone, but a separate GPS detector).

I suppose I am asking, which device on the compatible device list is a stand alone / designated detector (not a sat nav)?

Maybe you should Google each of the devices listed on the compatible list to see whether any are stand alone/dedicated detectors? My understanding is that they are all satnavs or smartphones (but they ARE standalone, including the smartphones which sit in your pocket, except for the ones which are satnavs built into vehicles).

Is the OP referring to real detectors that detect the radar or laser beam? Or something else? If something else, please clarify.
Laser detectors are a wast of time/money. The laser guns get your speed in about 1/3 second and don't have a lot of 'scatter' to pick up either. So if you are targeted by a laser gun, it's too late to do anything about.

Something else. GPS detector only, no map, audio alerts, not a smartphone.

And it'they are not not GPS detectors they are GPS receiving devices. The conventional term (in speed camera terms) for a detector, is a device that will receive the radar transmissions or laser transmissions from a speed camera/gun. And you have said that you do not want such a device, so that only leaves a GPS device in conjunction with a camera position database, which is what now think you are asking about.

There is no there is GPS device that will take the PGPSW database other than a PND or a smartphone. Unless someone knows different.

A PND is a portable navigation device - a satnav in other words.

But you don't necessarily have to be using the map or the navigation, or have it on the dash.

You can get verbal warnings of the cameras as long as the PND is plugged in and it can get a GPS signal - maybe in your bin between the front seats perhaps.
