Community Speedwatch schemes have proved popular over the years with many enthusiastic volunteers across the country joining the movement.
Community Speedwatch is an initiative where local communities join with the support of the Police to monitor speeds of vehicles using speed detection devices.
However, for one particular village that enthusiasm has waned. Kings Worthy, Hampshire has decided to scrap their local initiative due to lack of interest - they simply can't muster up enough people to help.
Their £1500 budget will instead be allocated by the parish council to other 'Planning and Highways' funding.

Maybe speed is not regarded as an issue in the village by the locals, perhaps the data to hand could confirm matters.
The challenge I feel we currently have is the ease of finding the data related to sites where cameras are located, be they fixed or mobile.
By data I mean per year the number of crashes and their severity (fatal, serious, minor) and the number of drivers detected speeding and their speeds v the posted speed limit.
Once we have very easily found data and the matter is more transparent the interest in such community involved events will either in my view rise if there is felt the justification or it will wane, the latter with no injuries on our roads is naturally the ideal. |

Been there, done that and still got the hi-viz teeshirt. (purely out of curiosity)
It's not a lack of interest but lack of action on reported offenders. Three reports of a vehicle speeding should result in a letter to the RK who may not have been the driver on any occasion. Prosecution cannot happen as the equipment used is not calibrated and the users are not qualified. Police refusing to act on reports owing to lack of finance for the three letters required before a visit to warn the RK of possible action. One day alone resulted in 140 speeders on a village road past a school.
Speed Watch abandoned and a very large speed table has had more effect. |

As opposed to a speed hump speed tables are an extended flat-top hump with at least a 6 metre long plateau, plus ramps. |
