@ stephenbeck as M8TJT said - yes I solved it by having to delete 3 extra font files as per my earlier post - but only for v8 maps.

i don't know if you have to delete the font files if you follow the processes and/or macro's detailed in this and other threads by for example Kremmen, pbridgeman, and Nemesis1 which modify the basic file before using POI loader. I haven't got that far yet.

Perhaps someone could clarify?

Terry

The problem is that this thread has wandered way off the original topic of Chinese characters. Very Happy

Is there any chance that a standard Garmin SD card will run on the MB system do we think?

I don't think it would. Isn't the MB SD card linked to the vehicle via the VIN. I know when I've updated the map and/or the software there's a verification page that comes up when I reinsert it into the car confirming it's for use with that vehicle.

That said, I know on a well known auction site "genuine" MB Garmin cards are for sale which allegedly can be registered to the car as they are unused.

I guess you'd need to look at the files on the Garmin card and compare what's different to the MB one perhaps?

I suspect as someone else posted that the processing power or memory capacity of the MB kit is not up to handling much above what it's designed for. This might explain why notification results are variable depending on what else it's trying to do i.e navigate, manage traffic, display poi's make announcements etc.

Just a thought!

Thank you very much for your solution below. This worked perfectly on my system which now likewise gives the camera icon on the extreme left and the distance on the extreme right on the red banner that appears at the top of the screen. Bongs are pretty consistent overall on my system.

After upgrading to V8 yesterday I like everyone else had the return of the Chinese (or other Eastern fonts) in the camera bar. After two afternoons of trial and error I've managed to get rid of them by deleting these 3 additional font files

006-D4436-02.bin
006-D4436-03.bin
006-D4436-06.bin

as well as the original ones we had to delete i.e.

006-D0952-01.bin
006-D0952-02.bin
006-D0952-03.bin

It seems to make no difference to anything else so far but I've only tried it on the simulated route settings and not on an actual "live route"

The display now shows the camera icon on the extreme left and the distance on the extreme right. Bongs are intermittent as ever.

Hope this helps.

Terry

@stephenbeck. Glad it worked.

Incidentally I followed npr's instructions on page 4 of this thread to add the icons and warnings and it works fine. I don't get any specific camera detail in the banner just the icon and distance but it seems pretty reliable and accurate.

You could also use Kremmen's program (also on page 4) to do all the fiddly bits for you.

The work I did with Nemesis some time ago did generate camera info in the banner, but, the text fed into the GPI had to be upper case.

I've asked a few times but .......

I've been successfully using the method suggested by npr on page 5 of this thread for some time until recently. Everything has worked fine until the last couple of times. The camera icons no longer display correctly, I just get a white box similar to the "built in" icons for fuel or food etc, with a magenta block in one corner.

Checking the POI loader before compiling the .gpi file it seems not to select the .bmp files i.e. gat.bmp, specs.bmp etc. only the corresponding .csv files are selected, .bmp's are greyed out. I've confirmed this by not including the .bmp files in the source folder and the result is the same. I've tried 22x22 and 44x44 icon sizes.

I've tried this on MAC and Windows machines with the same result.

Anyone any ideas please?

Thanks
