Has anyone ever seen a mobile speed cam in operation on a stretch of Smart Motorway?
Or would there simply be too much work to prove the current speed on the motorway at the time they were operating the seed gun and also confirming both times are in sync?
I'm just thinking as more motorways get upgraded then should we be removing the mobile sites from the database on those stretches...
What are your thoughts? |

It does seem to be a waste of effort trying to speedgun motorists when the smart motorway cameras will have them anyway. _________________ DashCam:

In my limited experience of motorway driving, the majority of 'mobile cameras' are on police perches and over bridges with quick access to the M/way. More likely, Mr. Plod is looking for something more 'important' than people doing a bit over the limit, unlike the various 'Safety Partnership vans' whose prime goal is to trap speeders. |

I think you're right, I don't see any point in having mobile warnings along stretches of Smart motorways. I doubt the police would waste time using mobiles there. Remove them. |

No - the Specs zone is often temporary until road-works are finished.
Then the predatory Mobiles return.

I think MaFt is referring to new sections of motorway that are now controlled by variable cameras that actually work.
Are they going to deploy a Kojak with Kodak in those sections. _________________ DashCam:

I would say yes if it's a permanent SPECS zone, no if they're just covering road works. |

If variable limits operate at rush hour, what about not rush hour? Quite often at 'variable' times, it isn't possible to do greatly excessive speeds, whereas outside those operational times, you can drive like the wind and generally, non-variable operation will be for much longer periods.
Maybe off topic, but are Hadecs ONLY variable? I had an idea that some of them are operating average speed? - M25? _________________ Dennis

Those M25 Hadecs are only in one location, down near Reigate, M23 somewhere so they can't be average. _________________ DashCam:

We've had the discussion elsewhere as to whether when there is no limit showing the cameras trigger at the NSL, and the consensus is some do and some don't.
I think the main point is that users of the database will be getting warnings for the smart cameras, whether there is a variable limit in force or not, so getting warnings for mobile cameras as well over the same stretch could be seen as unnecessary/annoying. |

Sorry, I don't drive on many Smart Motorway - most of my journeys are on Stupid Motorways!
Seriously, how's the regular mobile "clean up"? Do people in general notify you via CamerAlert or the website whenever they see a mobile site in use? If they do are you getting any reports of active mobile sites on Smart Motorways?

The "System" should know the speed at all times. The digital mobiles should be correct date and time. Even if the mobile cameras aren't linked to the system then old fashioned two-way radio should suffice i.e. "OK operator, this is base, the speed limit is now 50 mph - start targeting vehicles exceeding that limit". As a final check the targeted vehicles that are caught could be automatically checked against the system for time and speed.

I think that it probably would be a good idea to remove mobile sites from smart motorways but if you're still getting genuine reports of mole sites on smart motorways then perhaps mobile sites should still be left.

Smart motorways use static cameras, as opposed to average, so there is plenty of opportunity to speed and just slow down for the cameras. This is the type of driver that a mobile would likely target.
I would treat them as any other mobile and remove them if not reported as seen again with in a year. |
