|

As my Go940 has just died and the new TomToms do not support custom POI in a useful manner, I have bought a Garmin DriveLuxe 50. However I seem to be having routing problems in that it takes me down single track roads with limited passing places. An example is trying to get from M1/M25 junction to Chalfont St Peter where it takes me off the M25 at J17 then through single track roads which are barely driveable such as West Hyde Lane.
I have avoided unpaved roads in navigation preferences and am using fastest routing calculation. I cannot find anyway of setting preferences to avoid these roads other than manual avoids or forcing a route with Vias. There appears to be no speed on type of road function such as setting narrow roads to 2mph to avoid them.
Am I missing something or is this how Garmin SatNav routes? _________________ Drivelux |

Welcome to Garmin's 'suspect' routing. There have been so many complaints of this type over the years that you would have thought that Garmin had got a handle on it by now. |

Not sure which route you would expect it to take? If you come off at the next junction which is past Chalfont St Peter it's another 6 miles ... _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Not down a single track road with passing points? 6 miles on an A road may just beat the pants off a single track road.
Ah, see what you mean. Off at J17, then where? Alternatives routes do seem a little 'difficult', but so does West Hyde Lane in streetview. |

Just tried the route on my TomTom. It leaves the M25 at J17 onto Denham Way. Then takes Woodland Road, Hornhill Road, Rickmansworth Lane. It doesn't use West Hyde Lane. So it appears that the TomTom has picked a more sensible route that the Garmin. _________________ Paul |

Problem with route choice is that we all have different views. I'd be happy with 6 miles less if as in this case all you have to cope with is less than a mile of a narrow lane. Others prefer to avoid those at all costs. No choice is 'correct' _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

You see I wouldn't call that sensible as you have what looks like a housing estate to work your way around. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

I would rather drive around the edge of a housing estate on a reasonably wide road than negotiate the single track West Hyde Lane, but as you rightly say we all have different views and preferences.
I am about to move from TomTom to Garmin. The Garmin devices do seem to have some very nice features and no new TomTom device meets my needs. My only concern about the Garmin is this frequently reported routing along very minor roads. _________________ Paul |

iGO has a route option 'Easy' which routes on main roads wherever possible. I would still like to know what route MrT would chose in preference to his Garmin's.
Having the menu option of "Don't send me down stupidly narrow lanes unless it is absolutely necessary" would be good. As I just said, iGO simplify the menu item to "Easy" |

I guess though iGo will still get complaints about the Easy option _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

If iGo PND had the equivalent of Garmins digital traffic I'd be over there like a shot. What with directional alerts they could clean up. _________________ DashCam:

I am looking at the version for lorries to see if you can set up a 'silly' vehicle to get around this problem. |

I'll try setting up a 'silly vehicle' on iGO Truck later and see if it works. |
