New average speed cameras are to be installed across Lancashire.
The point-to-point cameras will cover eight different routes - including stretches which have seen the deaths of thirteen people in just six years.
Altogether, there has been 406 casualties, 62 of those being serious or life-changing.
The installation project will start this month and the full roll-out is planned for completion by the end of the year. Cameras will cover traffic flow in both directions.
Lancashire's Assistant Chief Constable commented: "Our primary aim is for all drivers to adhere to the safe speed limits on our roads and these particular roads are proven to be amongst some of our most dangerous."
He defended the decision saying: "It's well-researched and documented that speeding can kill."
The routes are:
* A565 Southport Road (1.2m) between B5246 at Mere Brow and the Gravel Lane roundabout at Banks.
* A583 Preston New Road (7.5m) between M55 J 4, through Kirkham bypass, and Blackpool Rd at Preston Old Rd, Clifton.
* A588 Head Dyke Lane, Pilling (2m) between Fold House Caravan Park and Bourbles Lane.
* A59 Brockholes Brow, Preston (0.5m) between M6 junction 31 and Glenluce Drive.
* A6 London Road, Preston (0.7m) between Capitol Centre (Winery Lane) and Albyn Street East.
* A675 in Belmont (8.5m) between M65 junction 3, through Abbey Village and Belmont to Scout Road.
* A682 Gisburn Road, Pendle (5.2m) between A59 at Gisburn and Whittycroft Avenue (between Barrowford and Blacko).
* B6232 Grane Road, Haslingden (4.7m) between A56 through Haslingden Grane to A6177 Elton Rd junction with Sough Lne.

No - Inappropriate speed MAY kill. |

Not sure what point you're trying to make, fact is speeding can kill ... or rather speeding can lead to an incident where someone dies ... nothing to do with inappropriate speed (however you determine that since what may be inappropriate for you will no doubt be different for me, hence why we have speed limits or it would be a free for all) _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

The faster you go, the more likely you are to be killed. Fact! If you have an accident, the faster you drive, the accident WILL be more serious. It's called kinetic energy (KE) and increases with speed. KE is proportional to speed squared, so double the speed quadruples the KE = more damage. |

Lets be real, speeding does not kill. Never has and its likely it never will.
Its the stopping that hurts.
Speed limits are set in an arbitary way, and they are going down. A lot of 60s are now being reduced to 50, 40s to 30, and 30s to 20.
I dont think anyone has yet said they were driving dangerously when they did 60 in a 60 just because the speed limit is now 50.
Cars are safer now than they ever have been. They stop quicker, go round corners quicker, mot's are more stringent yet we reduce speed limits. It does not make sense.
Accidents and deaths are lower than ever yet we reduce speed limits.
People forget that the ability to travel was and is key to a decent standard of living, it gives people access to jobs outside the local village, ie to better paying jobs which in turn raises wages in the village to compete. Yet by reducing speed limits we increase the amount of traffic on the road at any one moment as each journey takes longer to complete. Increased congestion results which then increases journey time.
Then we have the effect on goods, lowering speed limits adds costs to your pint of milk etc as the longer its on a truck the more the delivery costs.
And then there is where and when. 80 miles an hour on an empty motorway is much safer than 80 on a very crowded motorway.
30 down a leafy backstreet is safer than 30 outside a school at letting out time.
The key to safety is not lowering speeds its driving standards.
They are currently terrible, how many drivers have you had pulling out of motorway slips without giving way to motorway traffic. For some reason they think the slip has priority over the existing traffic, despite the highway code and road markings. That is indicative of their driving ability. Improve that to get better safer roads.
Modern cars and saferty ads have people beleiving all they have to do is stay under the speed limit to be safe, and they become poor drivers. Start campaigns to get these people to see that its the responsibility of everyone to drive safely. Pulling out of a side road into a main road into the pathh of a motorcycle car or lorry is much more likely to injure someone than going 10mph over the limit. |

Well while its true that improving driving standards would help your view on speed is wrong. Just taking your last statement. Yes, pulling out of a side road into the path of traffic can cause an accident. That accident would be far more severe if the vehicle involved was speeding _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |
