The installation of speed cameras have been blamed for making another road dangerous.

A resident of Stentaway Road in Plymstock, Devon, Clem Spencer, says his road has become a 'rat run' since average speed cameras were positioned along neighbouring Billacombe Road.

He claims that drivers are avoiding the cameras by using his road which has several blind spots and sections with no pavements.

Mr Spencer commented: "I live right on the bend and I struggle to see up the road and can't see at all looking down the road. Trying to pull out is frightening. I have to leave the house two or three times a day whether it's work, taking the dogs out, going down to Elburton or visiting Morrisons."

He added that he worries for his six grandchildren who use the road regularly to get to and from school.

Plymouth City Council say they will carry out a survey on the road.

TfL 'improved' a traffic light junction bout 400 yds from me a few years back. Now at rush-hour times a I get a stream of cars cutting through my rather narrow road at high speed.

The improved traffic lights have a very long pedestrian phase, so there are huge tail backs and motorists take the side roads to get around them. Even if it only saves a few seconds.

Similar situation close to me. They built a new bypass to take traffic around the outside of a town but at the end of the new bypass where it meets the A17 they decided that a T junction would be more appropriate than a roundabout. Long queues at peak times for traffic trying to turn right from the bypass onto the A17.

Local drivers reverted to the quicker old route through the town so the traffic lights in town were re-phased to hold up the traffic.

Now the local drivers use rat runs through residential roads to avoid the traffic lights.

The latest solution is to build the roundabout at the end of the bypass which should have been built originally.

Not a rat-run issue, but several years ago, my local council decided to solve a traffic flow problem by replacing traffic lights at a crossroads with a roundabout. (A pretty bad roundabout where buses have to straddle both lanes to get across, but that's a different matter).

Fast forward to this year, and they decide they have to cure a traffic flow problem in a different area. What do they do? They have just replaced a roundabout with a set of traffic lights.

Does it work? No.
