Just posted in the TTusers forum:-

Exactly WHAT does "This device has failed End Of Life Check!!" (and "Add to cart" is blocked) mean in the TT mapshop etc? Seems you cannot buy maps for these good & reliable devices any more! True or not?

1. Have TT really stopped selling new maps etc for NAV2 devices WITHOUT AN ANNOUNCEMENT ANYWHERE?
2. Surely they wouldn't be THAT inefficient or indifferent to their customers to simply just STOP all support, or would they?
3. Will they continue to honour those with paid for subscriptions?

I think we should be told officially, don't you?

is it even economical to keep a nav 2 device up to date when nav4 devices come with free lifetime maps traffic speedcams from around £150 or under £100 with free lifetime map updates

removing nav 2 support will stop people pirating their maps

by now this must be a small income stream for tomtom

To quote you both, "economical" has absolutely no bearing in relation to these "good and reliable " devices. There are thousands of them out there and well loved they are too, including me. I only recently renewed my Map Update Service and consider it an invaluable device. Look around and you'll see loads of them still in use. I'd bet it is still a significant income stream for tomtom.

"removing nav 2 support will stop people pirating their maps" Damn, bang goes my hobby then!

Strange that you can still buy the single version map(s) through TTHome although I wonder how long before that's blocked too.

I agree with Dennis that there surely must be literally thousands more NAV2 devices still out there compared with the newer models and all the time customers are happy to pay for new maps; why kill the goose...?

The tt users forum is literally bursting with (apart from those bloody kitchen spam ads); moans & groans, complaints, whinges, bitching etc regarding the newer NAV3 & NAV4 devices (AND MyDriveConnect which often deletes your maps for you....bless!) but far fewer complaints/queries etc regarding the obviously more reliable (and WAY more plentiful) NAV2's

It's not just reliability, it's functionality where I'm concerned. I mean, just one of those function things is my remote control - what price that with my windscreen more than arm's length away? But that's only one reason why I run my GO520 alongside the other two - built in Renault R-Link, Nav 3 I think, but proprietary software, maps £55 for UKROI and even though I'm prepared to pay that, the last new one available was November 2015, map v955!, navigation performance from the dark ages. GO6100 - the only value this thing has is lifetime maps and traffic, functionality from the dark ages. Oh, if only I had a built in GO920 Live (which never existed, unfortunately).

After doing some more digging I think the current restrictions re buying (even small) maps through the TT mapshop rather than through TTHome only currently applies to NAV2 devices which have less than 2Gb internal memory irrespective of whether they have an SD card slot or not (for more or bigger maps I thought?)

Seems it was "just another TT error" and is now back to normal again!

Maybe mods could/should close or trash this thread now?

JUST ANNOUNCED:-

CHANGES TO MAPS AND SERVICES UPDATES FOR OLDER DEVICES

Click here to see which products/categories this applies to.
WHY WE NEED TO DO THIS
Throughout the last 12 years, we have continuously improved the quality of the maps and software used by your navigation device. However, the internal memory required to install these higher quality maps increases every year.

While we work tirelessly to launch new technologies and deliver a great customer experience, it has become clear that some of our earlier generation navigation devices do not have sufficient internal memory to store the latest maps and features.

HOW IT WILL AFFECT YOUR DEVICE
For affected devices (see the full list of affected devices), from November 15, 2016:
You will not be able to buy new maps or services.
You will also not receive new software updates.
Your trusted device will continue to function as it does now, but your map will become out-of-date and navigation will be less accurate.
However, this may be the perfect opportunity to discover what our new range of navigation products has to offer you.
You can find more information on our latest devices here: tomtom.com/en_gb/sat-nav/car-sat-nav/

MAP UPDATE SERVICE AND LIVE SERVICES
You will continue to receive your map updates and LIVE Services updates until the end of your subscription. You will not be able to renew the subscription after it has ended.

HOW TO INSTALL A MAP UPDATE

To be able to install map updates on one of the devices listed below, you may need to free-up internal memory that is currently used by other content on your device, for example voices and POIs. If there is still not enough space, you have the following options:

Install a map zone (see video)
Insert an SD memory card to extend the storage space of your device (available on some devices only)

LIST OF AFFECTED DEVICES

GO 300 (M1) GO 730 (J3) ONE 125 (PA/PE/PH/PN/PV/PP)
GO 500 (M3) GO 750 (W8) START (XA/XC)
GO 510 / GO 710 (V5) GO CLASSIC (B1) XL 30 Series (RH/RO/RQ)
GO 520 (M2/M4) ONE 1st Edition (G1/G2) XL IQ Routes ² / XL Classic (GG)
GO 530 (J1/J2) ONE 2nd Edition (E1/Z1/Z2/Z3)
GO 540 (WT) ONE 3rd Edition (Y1/Y3/Y5/Y8)
GO 550 LIVE (W3) ONE XL (L2/L3/L4/L7/L9)
GO 715 (M7) ONE XL HD TRAFFIC (F3)

I'm not sure they really meant to include the GO 750 (W8) as the internal memory is 2GB!

Latest official announcement:-

Hi all,

My apologies for the confusion here!

We're indeed doing some changes with the service availability for some of our oldest device. For devices with internal memory of 1 GB or less it'll be no longer possible to purchase new maps or services through TomTom HOME or the mapshop (as of tomorrow). This will be communicated in TomTom HOME as well as through email to the affected customers but you can also find more information, including the exact device models affected,
https://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/topic/name/end-of-life
People with running subscriptions will of course be able to fully use their subscriptions

Maybe, just maybe they WILL remember to drop the GO 750 (W8) from the list

Mapshop tells me that Western Europe is compatible with my OneV3 512mb Embarassed

No e-mails or messages on Home or Mapshop.

So when they tell you that they will no longer support your old perfectly working device with new maps will you

a) go buy a new TomTom
or
b) go buy another brand Wink

You will (probably by the weekend) or at least before the new 980 maps are released any day now, find that these will be blocked for new maps. They were a couple of days ago but apparently TT jumped the gun so rescinded the block but only for a few days till they get their act together.

emails and/or TTHome notification is indeed imminent and scheduled for tomorrow so suggest you open/login to TTHome mid/late morning?

a) or b) above? who knows, maybe just buy an A-Z instead!

PS if you do want new maps/subscriptions DO IT NOW or it will end in tears & tantrums!

Here's my dilemma.

Last month, I bought map update service, one year, for my GO520, map UK&ROI, so it seems I shall continue to receive this. My dilemma is that if we are to believe they will honour this transaction, it occurs to me that if I buy another subscription, maybe it will add onto the existing one, so maybe I can get a long lasting map update service. I have heard, in the past, that if you buy the update service before the current one expires, the subscription will be extended from the expiry date of the current subscription.

Right now, looking at the map stuff on TT website, I get the result that my device IS compatible. It shows three options, one map, £34.95, one year update service (latest map + 4 updates) £39.95 and 1.5 years update service (latest map + 6 updates) ALSO for £39.95.

What do you reckon? I'm really tempted to go for the 1.5 year service in the hope that it will tag onto the end of my latest subscription, i.e. extend the subscription to April 2019. Worst case scenario is I only get one 1.5 year subscription expiring in April/May 2018 which would really only get me an additional six months (two maps) for £39.95. That's still a bargain, I guess.

Does anybody know how I can check the expiry of my map update service please? I did see it once, but can't remember how.

1. Yes, any new subscription is added to the end of any current one
2. Neither TTHome nor the mapshop have yet blocked these older devices BUT it is imminent so act fast!
3. I seem to recal being able to check in My Account on the tt website under "orders" but not sure if that still stands. Just give them a call them on:-
United Kingdom, 02079 490 134, Monday - Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
or email them asking for confirmation of expiry of current subs

I just tried that for my old 950. Unfortunately "orders" just shows your history of map purchases but doesn't show when your maps expire(d).

I'd have thought that there was a way on the unit, but my 950 is safely stored away - I now just use the old TomTom iOS app.

Regards,
